FLANDREAU The Sioux Valley Cossacks took part in their first tournament of the season, finishing in fifth place at the Flandreau Booster Club Invitational on Saturday.
Sioux Valley finished with 101.5 team points. Madison finished first with 208 points while Elk Point Jefferson finished second with 112, Deuel finished third with 111.5 and Flandreau finished fourth with 108 points.
Tate Steffensen improved to 7-0 on the year after finishing first at 138 pounds. Steffensen pinned Elk Point-Jeffersons Bode Fennel in 56 seconds in the first round before earning an 8-1 major decision over Luvernes Leif Ingebretsen and a 12-1 major decision over Deuels Ryker Gauger in the semifinals. Steffensen took home the title with a 10-8 decision over Elk Point-Jeffersons Luke Swatek in the championship.
Luke Derynck also stayed undefeated by winning the title at 144 pounds. Derynck won by an 18-1 tech fall over Viborg-Hurley/Irene-Wakondas Tucker DuBois in the quarterfinals, a 19-2 tech fall over Canistotas Joseph Haag in the semifinals and pinned Luvernes Hudson Hough in five minutes in the championship match.
Kyson Sundberg placed second place at 106 pounds for the Cossacks. Sundberg pinned Madisons Jacob Theede at 3:46 of the quarterfinals and earned a 9-6 decision over Luvernes Brody Kopp in the semifinals before dropping the championship match in an 18-2 tech fall to Red Rock Centrals Keegan Steen.
Owen Vandeweerd placed second at 285 pounds. Vandeweerd pinned Baltics Oliver Nedved in 1:02 in the quarterfinals and Howards Thomas Halverson at 2:43 in the semifinals. Vandeweerd lost in a 9-0 major decision to Madisons Ashten Dorhout in the championship.
The Cossacks will return to action when they take part in the Tri Valley quadrangular on Saturday.
