Details about the honorees follow.

NorthWestern Energy Industrial Award

In April, NorthWestern Energy turned the valve at a new renewable natural gas injection site in Brookings, marking a significant milestone. The facility processes biogas derived from dairy manure into pipeline-grade natural gas enough to supply around 10,000 residential customers annually. Methane that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere is captured, conditioned for quality, and used in the natural gas system.

Due to the capture process, renewable natural gas is usually a carbon-negative fuel and will offset unavoidable emissions. Not only does this provide an added economic value for dairy farmers to produce natural gas, but it is also a win for the environment.

NorthWestern Energys commitment to sustainability extends beyond the current project. By 2025, the company aims to implement renewable natural gas from five additional facilities into its South Dakota distribution system, reinforcing local energy infrastructure and supporting the dairy industrys growth. This project showcases NorthWestern Energys sustainable initiatives for transforming the Brookings economy and environment.

Brookings Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department Nonprofit/Government Award

By expanding no-mow areas throughout the city, the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department has embraced a natural approach to land management that reduces maintenance costs, promotes biodiversity, and supports local pollinators and wildlife. The revamping of the tree voucher program made it easier for residents to participate in reforestation efforts, ensuring that the city remains green and resilient for generations to come. The implementation of native planting pop-up gardens has added vibrant, sustainable green spaces throughout the city, further enhancing the departments commitment to environmental stewardship.

In collaboration with the Sustainability Council, the department has been instrumental in establishing a local food forest, which will provide fresh produce, educational opportunities, and a model for sustainable urban agriculture. The Forestry Division, in particular, has shown foresight in its response to the emerald ash borer infestation threat. Forestry had a comprehensive plan ready to implement the moment the pest was detected, demonstrating its proactive approach to preserving the citys urban canopy. Through these initiatives, the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department has not only protected the citys natural resources, but has also set a standard for sustainable practices within the community.

Kiley Rath Individual Award

Kiley Rath is a shining example of individual commitment to sustainability in our community, according to the Sustainability Councils nomination for the Individual award category. As an active member of the Sustainability Council, Rath has played a vital role in guiding the citys environmental initiatives. Her entrepreneurial spirit shines through her zero-waste retail collection, which she has successfully brought to life as a pop-up at The Carrot Seed Kitchen Co. in downtown Brookings.

By offering eco-friendly products, Rath not only promotes sustainable living but also encourages others to make environmentally conscious choices in their daily lives. Raths dedication to promoting sustainability in both her professional and personal life is inspiring, and she has made a significant impact on the communitys journey toward a greener future.
