BROOKINGS In a battle of two top-15 teams in the country, No. 9 Minnesota won nine of 10 matches against No. 14 South Dakota State and won the dual 30-3.
The only win of the match for the Jackrabbits was a big one as it was senior Cade DeVos 100th win of his career. The No. 3 ranked wrestler in the 174-pound weight class beat No. 25 ranked Clayton Whiting 2-0 and became the 17th SDSU wrestler to notch his 100th victory. The match was scoreless after the first period and DeVos then scored a point on an escape in the second period. He then secured the victory in the third period by gaining a point via riding time.
No. 14 Cooper Flynn of Minnesota and No. 4 Tanner Jordan kicked things off for the match at 125. Flynn won the match with a 7-2 decision after scoring two takedowns in the first period.
Derrick Cardinal took the mat next for the Jacks and he faced No. 8 Tyler Wells in the 133-pound weight class. Wells scored three takedowns in the second period and that led to a 10-2 major decision and gave the Golden Gophers a 7-0 lead.
Up next for SDSU was Julian Tagg in the 141-pound weight class. He took on No. 5 Vance VomBaur and held his own in the first two rounds, but a takedown in the third period led to an 8-3 victory for VomBaur.
SDSUs Colin Dupill faced No. 21 Drew Roberts at 174 pounds. Each wrestler scored escapes in the match and it would go to sudden victory. Roberts would stuff a takedown attempt and then rolled through it to get the takedown and the victory.
In the final match before intermission Cobe Siebrecht of SDSU took on Charlie Millard at 157 pounds. Millard had already beaten Siebrecht at the Daktronics Invitational earlier this season and this time he secured a 10-3 decision to make it 16-0 at the break.
Out of the intermission Drake Rhodes went up against No. 11 Andrew Sparks at 165 pounds. Sparks controlled most of the match before Rhodes picked up a takedown with 10 seconds left in the third period to make it an 8-4 decision victory for Sparks.
The most entertaining match of the day was a top-10 matchup between No. 4 Bennett Berge and No. 9 Max McEnelly at 184 pounds. Berge had a takedown in the first period and then picked up a riding point. He then gave up a takedown in the second period and early in the third period but had an escape point to send things to overtime. Neither wrestler scored a point in the first overtime period or the second. McEnelly then took Berge down in the third to pick up the victory and make it 22-3 heading into the final two matches.
Up next was another top-10 matchup as No. 8 Zach Glazier from SDSU took on No. 7 Isaiah Salazar at 197. Salazar scored a nearfall in the second to go up 4-0 and then had a reversal in the third to win with an 8-1 decision.
