Jackrabbits sink 11 3-pointers in win over Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. South Dakota State let it fly from long range, hitting a season-high 11 3-pointers in a 63-55 win at Ball State on Sunday afternoon.

The win helped the Jackrabbits improve to 5-2 on the season ahead of Wednesdays game against Eastern Washington at First Bank & Trust Arena in Brookings.

SDSU used their sharp shooting early, knocking down three 3-pointers on their first four possessions and 5-of-6 3-pointers in the first quarter. After taking a 20-18 lead at the end of the first quarter, Ball State rallied for a 27-26 lead on a three-point play by Maliyah Johnson and went on a 6-0 run to take a 33-27 lead into halftime.

But the Jackrabbits outscored the Cardinals 16-3 in the third quarter to regain the lead and extended it to 14 points on a 3-pointer by Haleigh Timmer with 4:56 to play. The lead didnt dip below double digits until a 3-pointer by Marie Kiefer with 39 seconds remaining and the Jacks held on to earn the win.

Katie Vasecka led SDSU with 17 points and three 3-pointers while Timmer had 12 points and four 3-pointers on seven attempts. Brooklyn Meyer had nine points and six rebounds and Madison Mathiowetz had nine points.

Mesa Byom had seven points and six rebounds and Paige Meyer had six points and six assists.

Kiefer led Ball State with 19 points and eight rebounds. Ally Becki had 14 points and six rebounds.

SDSU shot 40.4 percent from the floor including 11-for-22 (50%) on 3-pointers. The Jacks also made 14-of-18 (77.8%) free throws and outrebounded the Cardinals 35-31. SDSU also committed 16 turnovers.

Ball State shot 36.4 percent from the floor including 3-for-18 (16.7%) on 3-pointers. The Cardinals also made 12-of-19 (63.2%) free throws while committing 13 turnovers.
