BROOKINGS The Brookings Rangers split their first home games of the year as they lost to Sioux Falls West 2-1 on Friday night and beat Aberdeen 3-2 on Saturday at the First Bank & Trust Rink at the Larson Ice Center.
The Rangers are 2-1-0 on the season and will travel to face the Yankton Bucks on Saturday evening.
Friday
Sioux Falls West 2, Brookings 1
The Rangers and Flyers had a tight defensive battle until the game opened up with three minutes left in the third period. James Shea scored a power play goal from Jackson Breuer and Jackson Henry with 3:03 remaining and Jack Campbell added an unassisted empty net goal with 1:18 to go to add an insurance goal.
Nolan Krogman scored with an assist from Jackson Heller with 41 seconds to go but the Rangers couldnt find the equalizer.
Brookings outshot Sioux Falls West 28-19. Matthew Bothe started for the Rangers and made 18 saves.
Saturday
Brookings 3, Aberdeen 2
The Rangers bounced back thanks to a pair of goals early in the first period. Tre Chistopherson opened the scoring with a goal from Krogman with 16:20 left in the first period and Riley Linstad scored from Jay Harris 11 seconds later to give Brookings a 2-0 lead.
Trayke Roehrich scored with assists from Aiden Posthumus and Lleyton Kleffman with 9:38 left in the first period but Carson Kludts power play marker from Krogman and Cody Jacobson with 14:39 left in the second period served as the game-winning goal.
Briggs Medill made things close with a power play goal with 52 seconds remaining in the game but Bothe held on, making 27 saves to preserve the win.
Brookings out-shot the Cougars 29-19.
