Rangers split with Storm on opening weekend

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa The Brookings Rangers girls hockey team split its first two games of the season on its opening weekend. The Rangers earned a 5-1 win over the Sioux Center Storm on Saturday night and lost to the Storm 2-3 on Sunday morning.

The Rangers will return home for its home opener against the Sioux Falls Flyers at the Brookings Dental Clinic Rink in the Larson Ice Center on Friday night.

Saturday

Brookings 5, Sioux Center 1

The Rangers used a four-goal second period to defeat the Storm in their season opener on Saturday night.

The Rangers opened the scoring with a goal by Miyah Foerster from Sawyer Triplett with 8:09 left in the first period and Triplett doubled the lead with a marker from Ava Kahle and Anna Rasmussen with 7:37 to go in the second period.

Kinzey Grendler made it a 3-0 game seven seconds later on Rasmussens second assist of the game before Riya Brenner scored from Corinne McCord to put Sioux Center on the board.

Grendler scored her second goal of the game from Rasmussen and Julissa Peterson with 1:21 left in the second period and both teams skated through a scoreless third period.

The Rangers out-shot the Storm 36-16 and Rorii Quam made 15 saves to earn the win.

Sunday

Sioux Center 3, Brookings 2

Brooklyn Byls goal in the third period proved to be the difference as the Storm defeated the Rangers to split the weekend series on Sunday morning.

Grendler scored her third goal of the season unassisted to put the Rangers on the board in the first period but the Storm responded with three unanswered goals by Lexi Ringelberg, Addison Svoboda and Byl.

Peterson scored with an assist from Rasmussen with 4:55 to play but the Rangers couldnt find the equalizer before the final horn.

Brookings out-shot the Storm 35-29 in the loss. Rorii Quam made 28 saves for the Rangers.
