BROOKINGS Televised comedian and South Dakota native Timmy Williams is performing this weekend at the Comedy Room at Wooden Legs.
Local comedian Sean Leary founded the Comedy Room in 2021 and serves as producer, booking performers each month. He said Williams, a native of Watertown, is their biggest headliner so far.
I would say Timmy is going to be our biggest act, Leary said. Hes just been on TV a bunch, and hes really funny and really seasoned. So were really excited to have him come headline.
Williams was a member of the comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U Know. In 2006, they won Best Sketch Group awards at both the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival and the Aspen Comedy Festival. Their TV program ran on cable channel IFC from 2007-11. Williams is also a co-writer and voice actor for the upcoming animated film Mars.
Leary described Williams humor as dry yet surreal.
When hes on his own up on stage its a dry wit and silly fun, Leary said. Hes really outside of the box. To me its got a little bit of a Monty Python type deal.
Leary helped establish the Comedy Room during the pandemic, when indoor venues for live performances became scarce.
It was just easier to curate comedy in a place like South Dakota where there werent as many people, werent as tight of spaces, so that we could still do indoor shows, Leary said. Its kind of one of the only places to see standup comedy consistently in South Dakota. Were bringing in headliners from Minneapolis, Chicago and Omaha. So theres a lot of different voices coming through.
They try to arrange a live performance at least one weekend per month.
We really are having a good time with what were curating over there, Leary said. Its been a big hit for the community. Were going on four years here in February.
He said theyre especially excited to have booked Williams.
I would say Timmy is our biggest and best Its cool that hes local, too, Leary said. (Audiences) might not know his name, but theyre going to go, wow this guy looks familiar.
Williams will perform both Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.
Well have an opener that hes bringing in from Watertown who will do about 20 minutes, and then Timmy will do a headlining set for about an hour. So the whole event is about 90 minutes, Leary said. Tickets are $20, and we can do them at the door. But this one might sell out in advance, so dont wait.
Tickets are available either through Wooden Legs or Learys Eventbrite page at https://www.eventbrite.com/o/sean-leary-7470200911.
