ROCHESTER, Minn. Gigi Hioki won the 200-yard freestyle for the second day in a row Saturday for a South Dakota State womens swimming and diving squad that finished third out of five teams at the Huskies Invite contested at the Rochester Rec Center.
A sophomore from Liberty Lake, Washington, Hioki improved on her winning time Friday by .38 seconds, touching the wall for the final time in 5 minutes, 7.63 seconds. Hioki also anchored SDSUs 400 freestyle relay, which wrapped up the meet with a third-place finish. The quartet of Sara Juez, Hannah Miller, Emma Schultz and Hioki combined for a time of 3:31.59.
Two other Jackrabbits tallied individual third-place finishes on Saturday as Marissa Branham earned bronze in the 200 breaststroke, 2:26.66, and freshman Kailee Crane placed third in the 200 individual medley, 2:11.17.
After winning the 3-meter diving competition on Friday with a score of 256.30 points, Anna Mei Castro placed fourth on the 1-meter board Saturday with 221.35 points over six dives.
Other fourth-place finishes in the pool were turned in by Poppy Mead in the 1,650 freestyle (18:00.10) and Emma Ingalls in the 200 butterfly (2:10.56). Fellow freshman Isabella Gnewuch came in fifth in the 200 butterfly, 2:10.95, while Lily Esmas (200 backstroke, 2:09.66) and Ema Schultz (100 freestyle, 53.69 seconds) also contributed fifth-place individual showings.
Northern Iowa claimed the team title with 2,098 points. South Dakota was second with 2,008.5 points, with the Jackrabbits ending up third with 1,799.5 points.
The Jackrabbit women are scheduled to host Nebraska in dual action Nov. 8. Start time is set for 4 p.m. at the Marshall Center Pool.
