Kaycee Manding’s goal in extra time lifts Jackrabbits over Coyotes in conference tourney

BROOKINGS Kaycee Mandings goal in the 100th minute gave South Dakota State a 2-1 victory over South Dakota in the first round of the Summit League Tournament at Fishback Soccer Park in Brookings on Friday night.

A late goal from Katherine Jones nodded things up and then the two teams went scoreless in the first extra time period. Manding then set up for a far free kick after USDs Campbell Zimmers picked up a yellow card. She sent the free kick towards the box and it just missed the head of Kaetlyn Buelke but it ended up in the back of the net and the Jacks bench stormed the field to celebrate with Manding.

Kaycee serves a great ball and thats why she hits a lot of our set pieces, whether its from there or corner kicks, said SDSU head coach Brock Thompson. She just put it in a spot where there was a chance that one of our players could get it and theres a chance that it can catch the back post and thats a hard spot for the goalkeeper to be in.

USD struck first after a scoreless first half. Brooklyn Bordson took a pass from Izzy Quintavalle and put the ball past Emma Knack to give the Yotes a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute.

The Jackrabbits then put on the pressure and it was Jones who finally came through in the 86th minute. Laney Murdzek passed the ball to Mia Bosch and then she found Jones in the box. Jones made a move and then scored on Cambell Fischer to tie things up.

Thompson had a message for his team heading into the extra periods.

What I said to the team was when we score, it better be the best celebration that weve had all year long. But what we were focused on was continuing to play our way and focusing on the stuff we were good at. Im just really proud of how we played from the time they scored all the way through, Thompson said.

SDSU had a 30-6 advantage in shots. The Jacks had eight shots on goal and the Coyotes had three on goal.

Ive got a ton of belief in this team because this team can score in so many ways, but soccer is a funny game, Thompson said. Its postseason play and it comes down to moments. Im super proud of our team for finding [a moment] to advance to the next round.

Manding had two shots and both of them were on goal. Buelke led the Jacks with seven shots and one of them was on goal. Bosch had five shots and one of them was on goal. Avery Murdzek had four shots and one of them was on goal. Adrianne Agbayni had two shots and one on goal. Hailee Christensen had one shot that was on goal.

SDSU will advance to the semifinals in Fargo, N.D., where it will take on Denver on Thursday. The Jacks fell to the Pioneers a week ago in Brookings.

Weve got to be able to put this game away and learn from it, celebrate it, but then prepare for the next opponent. Theyre a very good team. They challenge you in certain areas, typical at midfield. The biggest thing for us against Denver is what happens in the transition moments, Thompson said.
