Elkton-Lake Benton’s second-half surge leads Elks by Hanson

ELKTON The Elkton-Lake Benton Elks trailed at halftime but they scored 32 of their 46 points in the second half as they defeated the Hanson Beavers in a Class 9AA quarterfinal game at the Elkton Athletic Complex on Thursday night.

The win helped ELB improve to 10-1 on the season but it didnt come easy even after jumping out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. The Beavers out-scored the Elks 14-0 in the second quarter to take a 14-13 lead into halftime but ELB responded by winning the third quarter by a score of 12-0.

Entering the fourth quarter with a 25-14 lead, ELB put the finishing touches on the game, winning the final frame 21-7 to advance to the semifinals.

Colt Beck completed 5 of 9 passes for 100 yards and added 12 carries for 73 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Tanner Stein added 16 carries for 205 yards and four touchdowns to go with two catches for 36 yards. He also had 12 tackles on defense.

Elliot Erickson had 13 carries for 109 yards and a touchdown.

Tanner Drietz had a 36-yard reception and an interception on defense. Myles Poindexter had an 18-yard reception. Savion Stephens had a 10-yard reception.

Quintin Westley and Taiton Boersma had eight tackles and 2.5 sacks each. Beck, Drietz and Erickson each had seven tackles.

Esten Schlimgen completed 9-of-24 passes for 120 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Beavers.

Stetson Riggs had 13 carries for 89 yards and a 26-yard reception.

Weston Kayser led Hanson with five catches for 50 yards.

The Elks will travel to second-seeded Hamlin for the semifinals with a 7 p.m. kickoff on Nov. 8.
