Sutton-Butler, Stevens the right choices

As a college student studying elementary education and someone who has fallen in love with South Dakota, I want to share my thoughts about why this election is important for the future of our community, particularly for people like me who hope to start their careers here.

Ive had the opportunity to experience life in both California and South Dakota, and the difference is clear. Here in South Dakota, especially in Brookings, Ive found a strong sense of kindness, connection, and support that I havent felt anywhere else. Whether its a friendly conversation with a cashier at Walmart or a genuine willingness to help from a neighbor, people here truly care about one another. This sense of community is exactly why I would love to build my life here and contribute as an elementary school teacher. But theres one big challenge: South Dakotas policies are making it increasingly difficult for people like me to start our careers and our families here.

As I work toward earning my degree, Im thinking ahead about what it will take to not only start my career as a teacher but also to thrive in South Dakota. Unfortunately, like many students and young professionals, Im concerned about the states teacher pay, the resources available in our schools, and the support we receive from leadership. The reality is that South Dakota still ranks near the bottom in teacher pay, and our schools face challenges in providing the resources they need to truly succeed. Its hard to see a future here if things dont change.

Thats why Im endorsing Fedora Sutton-Butler and Blake Stevens for the District 7 House. Fedora and Blake understand the importance of education, and they are committed to pushing for real, meaningful improvements. Both have a deep appreciation for the working class and the communities that make South Dakota strong. They recognize that investing in education isnt just about numbers its about the future of our state. When teachers are supported, our children are supported. And when our children succeed, so does our community.

Fedora has a long history of working in education, and shes seen firsthand the challenges teachers face. She knows what it takes to create an environment where students can grow and thrive. Blake, with his experience and commitment to advocating for working families, understands that its not just teachers who need support. Our entire community benefits when we invest in fair wages, affordable healthcare, and opportunities for young people to start their careers here.

In just two years, Ill be ready to start my career as a teacher. I want that career to be here, in South Dakota, where I feel at home and have family. But to do that, we need leaders in Pierre who will fight for the resources, pay, and support that educators and students need to succeed. Fedora and Blake are ready to be those leaders. They are ready to advocate for policies that will strengthen our schools, support our teachers, and give young professionals like me a reason to stay and build our lives in this amazing community.

If you care about the future of South Dakota whether youre a lifelong resident or someone who, like me, has recently made it home I encourage you to research Fedora Sutton-Butler and Blake Stevens. These two candidates are dedicated to creating a stronger South Dakota for everyone, and they understand that real leadership means standing up for what matters most: our people, our schools, and our future.

I urge you to vote for Fedora Sutton-Butler and Blake Stevens, whether youre voting today or on Nov. 5. Together, we can make sure that South Dakota remains a place where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
