Roger DeGroot has over 40 years of leadership in education as a K-8 principal and as a superintendent.
The last eight years of his career were spent as Brookings School District superintendent. After retiring he was elected to the Brookings School Board. These were some very difficult times for all school districts in South Dakota when state aid to education was cut by 8%. DeGroots experience and leadership ensured Brookings School District did more with less. He is a true and proven leader and consensus builder.
The DeGroots have been residents of Brookings for over 18 years and Ive known Roger since the day he arrived in Brookings. I can attest to his integrity, professionalism and leadership skills. He has been very active in building relationships with our District 7 leaders in agriculture, private businesses, industries, local governments, our State elected officials and SDSU administrators. He understands the importance of secondary and post-secondary education and the connection of making sure our young people get the education necessary to develop our workforce in not only District 7, but throughout South Dakota.
He has attended many meetings and talked to many of our leaders in Brookings on workforce development as well as economic development and is dedicated to working with our leaders to solve these issues.
The past two years he has been very effective in Pierre and has achieved much in a short period of time.
DeGroot is all about kids and education. Over the past two years he was instrumental in drafting and passing the new Teacher Accountability Bill, which raises all South Dakota teachers’ starting salary to $45,000.
He sponsored and worked to pass funds for the Teacher Apprenticeship Pathway Program to address teacher shortages. He supported the tuition freeze for South Dakota public universities and he supported the increase in the maintenance and repair funds for all universities, including and additional $3.8 million for SDSU.
Roger DeGroot is a proven leader for District 7 that will continue to get things done for Brookings and the surrounding area. Please vote for DeGroot on Nov. 5.
