BROOKINGS The South Dakota State soccer team dropped its second Summit League match of the season on Thursday night at Fishback Soccer Park as the Denver Pioneers came away with a 2-1 victory.
All three goals came in the second half. Denvers Liv Moritz broke a 0-0 tie with a goal in the 65th minute. It was unassisted.
The Jackrabbits were able to tie things up just under four minutes later. Kaycee Manding sent one into the box on a corner and it found the head of Ava Grate and went into the back of the net. It was Grates first career goal.
However, the tie wouldnt last long as just under five minutes later the Pioneers regained the lead. Denvers Vanessa Murray intercepted a clearance and then worked her way into the box. She then dished it to Payten Ivins who found the back of the net and put Denver up 2-1 with 21 minutes remaining and that score stayed until the final whistle.
Denver outshot SDSU 22-8. The Pioneers had 10 shots on goal and the Jacks had four shots on goal. The Pioneers had one corner kick and 19 fouls. The Jacks had nine corner kicks and 11 fouls.
Grate, Avery LeBlanc and Adrianne Agbayni each had one shot that was on goal. Mia Bosch had three shots and one was on goal. Katelyn Beulke and Avery Murdzek each had one shot that wasnt on goal.
The Pioneers were led by Michaela McGowan who had eight shots and four of them were on goal. Ella Frost had four shots and two of them were on goal. Ivins had three shots and one was on goal. Mortizs lone shot was on goal. Riley Baker had two shots and one was on goal. Jordan Crockett had a shot on goal and Vanessa Murray had two shots that werent on goal. Jadyn Goodrich had one shot that was not on goal.
SDSU dropped to 11-4-2 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play. The Jacks will host Oral Roberts in the final regular season match on Sunday at 1 p.m. SDSU is now in third in the Summit League with 13 points. NDSU leads the conference with 16 points and places first through fifth are separated by four points.
