Pierre hosting annual Indian Education Summit in November

PIERRE The 2024 South Dakota Indian Education Summit will be Nov. 14, and a youth day will be Nov. 15, both at the Ramkota Event Center in Pierre.

The theme of the 21st annual Summit is “Woksape nahan Wookannige Ptaya Najin Au!” “Knowledge and Understanding brings Unity!” The summit aims to gather administrators, educators, and college students to increase awareness of the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings and Standards and explore opportunities to enhance and increase growth for Native American students.

Duane Hollow Horn Bear, from the Rosebud Sioux Reservation, is the keynote speaker for this years summit. Hollow Horn Bear is a Sicangu Lakota elder, an original elder author for the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings and Standards, and has been a prominent storyteller in the Lakota Virtue videos. The summit will feature 16 different breakout sessions with many exciting topics, some of which include Navigating AI in Education, Building Relationships, and Dissolving the Long-term Effects of Boarding Schools. The presenters will offer us tools and resources we can all use to ensure that todays youth can achieve success both in school and in society.

The summits final day is designed for k-12 students and their families to engage in activities and lessons about Native American culture and the nine tribes of South Dakota. Activities include drumming and singing techniques, Native storytelling, hand games, learning the meaning behind ceremonies, Lakota Star Knowledge, and the many uses of the buffalo. The youth day is free, and the Office of Indian Education encourages all students to attend.
