I moved to South Dakota during my youth, and in 2002, I came to Brookings to attend SDSU. I ended up staying, putting down roots, and building a life here. Brookings is where I chose to raise my family, and its where I help run a long-respected, family-owned small business, a staple in South Dakota that only thrives because of the dedication of a very talented team. Im proud to be part of a community that values hard work, inclusivity, honest conversation, and the beauty of our state.
Lately, Ive noticed a shift in South Dakotas politics that doesnt sit right with me. Weve seen our state become a testing ground for out-of-state interests pushing divisive, intrusive agendas. It feels like the voices of regular South Dakotans people who care about their communities and want a better future for their kids are getting drowned out.
Our schools are struggling. South Dakota ranks near the bottom in teacher pay, and we havent made the progress we need to give our kids the school resources they deserve. As a dad and foster parent, I see every day how important it is for kids to have a solid foundation, and I want leaders who will fight hard for that.
We also have a lot of work to do when it comes to our workforce, housing, and health care. Too many South Dakotans cant afford health insurance, and our rural hospitals and care facilities face serious challenges. Were suffering a workforce crisis, and our states leadership hasnt done enough to address it. Its no surprise were losing young talent there just arent enough opportunities for college grads to make a livable life here. Its a sad reality to play politics with.
Thats why Im endorsing Fedora Sutton-Butler and Blake Stevens for District 7 House. They understand what it means to serve a community and work for everyone, not just a political party. They believe in paying teachers fair wages, the right to affordable healthcare, and ensuring our people can access housing and childcare.
