FARGO, N.D. South Dakota State swept the North Dakota State Bison in three sets at Scheels Arena on Thursday night to remain undefeated on the season.
The Jackrabbits won the three sets by scores of 25-23, 25-13 and 25-18 to improve to 17-0 on the season ahead of Saturdays match at St. Thomas.
The first set was even before SDSU pulled ahead for a 13-9 lead. The Jacks took their largest lead of the set on Katie Van Egdoms kill that gave SDSU a 19-14 lead before NDSU used a 7-2 run to tie the match at 21 on an assist error by Lauren Jansen.
Sylvie Zgonc and Van Egdom picked up kills to give SDSU a 23-21 lead but Ali Hinze answered with a pair of kills to tie the set at 23-23. Sydni Schetnan put the Jacks back in front with a kill on the next point, however, and SDSU won the set when Madison Burr and Alyssa Groves forced an attack error on Hinze for a 25-23 victory.
The second set was easier for SDSU as they opened on a 12-3 run. The closest NDSU would get is on an attack error by Annalee Ventling-Brown that closed the gap to 17-10 but the Jacks pulled away from there with an 8-4 run that ended on a kill by Burr to secure a 25-14 win.
The third set began as both teams battled to a 9-9 score early but SDSU used a 7-1 run to take a 16-10 lead on an attack error by Emma Tallman. NDSU battled back to cut the Jacks lead to 18-14 on a kill by Hinze but the Jacks answered with a 6-3 run to force match point and finished the Bison off on a kill by Schetnan in a 25-18 win.
Zgonc and Burr each finished in double figures in kills. Zgonc had 15 kills while Burr had 10. Zgonc also added six digs defensively.
Schetnan and Van Egdom also had five kills each for the Jacks.
Rylee Martin had 18 assists and 11 digs for SDSU. Rachel Weiber also had eight digs.
Schetnan was tremendous at the net for SDSU with four solo blocks and three block assists.
Burr had a solo block and two block assists. Groves had three block assists. Camryn Honn had a solo block and block assist and Zgonc had a block assist.
Zgonc also had three aces. Burr, Martin Joslyn Richardson and Honn each had an ace.
Hinze led NDSU with 14 kills and 17 digs. Eke Denessen had 12 assists. Arianna Blohm had a solo block and four block assists. Hinze, Lauren Jansen and Maddy Dombeck each had a service ace.
SDSUs match with the Fighting Hawks is slated for Saturday at noon in Minneapolis.
