When studying Scripture, I often put it into my vernacular. This can, unintentionally, make it hilarious. Take, for example, the general outline used in the Pauline Letters. Each follows a similar path, beginning with, Grace to you; I thank God for you. Followed by the reminder to hold fast to the Gospel.
Each end with additional greetings, such as, Timothy says hi. It is in the instructional messages Paul includes in the main portion of each letter that I find humor. Let me paraphrase it in our modern vernacular: For the love of everything holy, please stop acting so stupid.
Of course, thats not really what Paul said.
Paul, concerned for the maturing of the believers, defined beliefs, addressed behaviors, and soothed controversies of early Christianity. He instructed them in how to treat each other, how to minister to unbelievers, duties of believers, and the needs of believers for studying the Word, committing to prayer, and gathering for fellowship and teaching. Pauls writings are foundational texts for Christian theology and ethics. They are, also, inspiring for daily devotions and studying for on-going encouragement and growth for each of us.
I offer several well-known Pauline verses to consider for daily study and contemplation:
- 1 Corinthians 1:10, Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you. The same thing referred to is the message of Jesus Christ and Gods love. Paul is urging unity among believers.
- 1 Corinthians 13:12, 13, For abideth faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love. Paul wants believers to remember that, though there are many good attributes and perspectives, love is the greatest because God showed his love for us by sending his son to die on the cross for our sins.
- 2 Corinthians 12:9, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Many are fearful when going through trying times. Paul reminds us that Gods grace offers peace and strength to face them.
- Philippians 4:4-7, . . in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. When I read this one, I cannot help but be comforted knowing that Gods presence goes with me. His peace will keep me faithful (heart) and calm (mind). His peace will keep one balanced in their relationship with God and in their emotions.
- Romans 8:28, We know that all things work together for good for those who are called according to his purpose. We can be confident knowing that each of us are called to be his witnesses, to offer encouragement to believers, and to share his love with those who do not know him.
Pauls writings, and all of Scripture, provide instruction, encouragement, and growth in maturity for the believer.
