BROOKINGS Sean Murphy, an 800-meter runner on the SDSU track team, proved to be pretty good at long distances, too.
Murphy, 19, of Omaha, Neb., won the Bob Bartling Hobo Day 5K in 15:57 Saturday, finishing 15 seconds ahead of Gabe Peters, 25, of Brookings. Peters, a 2022 SDSU grad, was a long distance standout for the Jacks. Murphy, a Millard West graduate, and Peters ran together for the first half of the 3.1-mile race and then Murphy took a small but comfortable lead.
Peters won the 2023 Hobo Day 5K with a time of 15:32 , but a repeat wasnt in the cards. Murphys average pace was 5:08 per mile.
Finishing third through fifth were Joseph Barnes, 27, of Dell Rapids, 17:18; Andrew Pick, 22, of Brookings, 18:15; and Trevor Hinderaker, 27, of Astoria, 18:23.
Winning the womens division was Julia Steffl, 19, of Callaway, Minn. Her time of 19:56 (6:25 pace) was 14th overall. Three weeks earlier the SDSU student had finished third in the womens division of the Jack 15. Both events are sponsored by Prairie Striders Running Club.
Steffl wasnt challenged for the womens crown. Finishing second was Angie Thompson, 50, of Brookings, 34th overall with a time of 22:00.
Finishing third through fifth were Madeline Hochhalter, 18, of Alexandria, Minn., 22:23; Emma Hochhalter, 20, of Alexandria, 22:58; and Hannah Terkildsen, 19, of Woonsocket, 23:44.
The event had 267 finishers including a number who were of single-digit age. The fastest in that bunch was Jackson Hestermann, 9, of Aurora, finishing 35th overall with a time of 22:03.
On the other end of the spectrum, the oldest finisher was Rod Boltjes, of Alta Loma, Calif., 45:03.
