BROOKINGS The South Dakota State soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against in-state rival South Dakota on Friday night at Fishback Soccer Park.
The Jackrabbits (10-2-2) outshot the Coyotes (3-6-4) 22-6, but USD did just enough to keep SDSU out of the net in the second half.
SDSU got on the board first in the 16th minute of the game. Kaycee Manding took a corner kick and hit off of Lauren Eckerle on the left side of the box and popped right in front of Katelyn Buelke and she put it in the back of the net to put the Jacks up 1-0.
That was a great set piece, said SDSU head coach Brock Thompson. [Manding] served it to the back post and it was heading back across and [Buelke] was able to finish it as the ball came back across. So, good service, good first ball and a scrappy goal.
USD would tie things up 13 minutes later as Brooke Conway put one past the goalkeeper on the left side. The goal was assisted by Brooke Nelson and Ashby Johnson.
The Jacks had plenty of chances in the second half but USDs Cambell Fischer made seven saves on the night. One of Hailee Christensens four shots hit the crossbar in the second half as well.
Thompson said he thought his team did a good job in the second half of getting pressure and putting shots on net, but the Jacks should not have been in that position.
I think a little bit of it came down to the first half. After we scored, I felt like we got a bit casual with our play and that allowed them to equalize. I think if we play the game from [our] goal the way we play the second half, I think its kind of a moot point of getting a second goal. I think it probably comes and theyre off of the scoreboard. Im proud of the way we came out in the second half, but we just need to play that way for 90 minutes, Thompson said.
Mia Bosch led the Jacks with five shots and one of them was on goal. Christensen and Avery Murdzek each had four shots and two on goal. Laney Murdzek had three shots and one of them was on goal. Beulke, Katherin Jones and Adrianne Agbayani each had one shot that was on goal. Eckerle had two shots and Avery LeBlanc had one shot.
Emma Knack had three saves for the Jackrabbits at goalkeeper. SDSUs defense made some stops down the stretch of the match and Thompson said that is a result of having veterans on the back end.
The game got open a little bit and when its open and theres some transition theres moments like that. We have a lot of experience in the back with our defenders and [Knack] and I thought they played well all game, Thompson said.
SDSU dropped to 3-1-1 in conference play. The Jacks had won six matches in a row and although a draw was not what they wanted on Friday night, Thompson said he thinks his team will be pleased with how they played when they watch the film.
Its always about our performance. Well review this game and prepare the same way we always do. I think when we watch film well actually realize we played quite well for large stretches of this game. Probably better than we played against St. Thomas. So, for us its about striving for our best performance, Thompson said.
SDSU will hit the pitch again on Oct. 17 when the Jacks play at North Dakota State at 6 p.m.
