BROOKINGS The 12th Annual Oakwood Open disc golf tournament is slated to kick off this Saturday at Oakwood State Park near Bruce.
Held every fall at the park, the tournament serves as a celebration of disc golf and the great outdoors, as well as a fundraiser for a different local charity each year.
This year, participants will be throwing to raise money for the Brookings Volunteer Service Bank, who describes its mission as to provide special services to the elderly, handicapped, youth, and underprivileged.
The Volunteer Service Bank coordinates volunteers and neighbors helping neighbors for things like errand running, rides to medical appointments, snow removal and much more.
The brainchild of Tim Conners, the Oakwood Open continues to grow and donate a bigger share to charity each year.
This year is no exception, as thanks to generous donations from the Brookings Friends of Baseball and Hy-Vee, the tournament will offer concessions for a suggested donation with all proceeds being added to the charitys kitty.
Registration for this years event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at Oakwood Park. Discs in the air at 11 a.m.
Cost for participants is $30, which includes an always-stylish T-shirt from Cleanslate Design+Print and door prizes from scads of local businesses.
Camping is available Friday and Saturday night for $15 per head.
As always, perishable food donations will be collected for the Brookings Food Pantry, as well.
Last years tournament raised $1,000 for the Brookings Backpack Project. The winners were Loren Buterbaugh and Tanya Rumbolz, who both repeated as champs.
