BROOKINGS The Brookings chapter of the General Federation of Womens Clubs will be participating in the second annual National Day of Service on Sept. 28 at the Brookings Farmers Market. All GFWC groups, nationwide, will come together on this day to join in service to raise public awareness and gather resources to help those who experience food insecurity and hunger in their respective communities.
The Brookings GFWC will again be involved in this community service project by collecting funds to help reduce childrens negative Brookings School District lunch account balances.
Funds will be raised by sales of various types of Chex Mix, cookies, bars, muffins, cracker mix and caramel corn puffs. There will also be hand-sewn tote bags for sale. Monetary donations will be welcome at this time as well. All proceeds will be matched, up to $500, by the Brookings GFWC, and donated to the Brookings School District.
Last year, the Brookings GFWC raised $1,000 through snack sales and donations. They then added $500 from their treasury to attain a total of $1,500 going to the Brookings School District for lunch debt.
In addition, a raffle quilt will be displayed and raffle tickets will be sold. The cost for one raffle ticket is $1, with six tickets going for $5. The drawing for this quilt will be on Dec. 14 at the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum’s Holiday Market. All proceeds from the quilt raffle will go the Brookings GFWC for future community service projects.
The GFWC is dedicated to continue their volunteer efforts through community service. They ask the Brookings community to once again help them achieve this goal. Please support their efforts by purchasing or donating at the booth at the Brookings Farmers Market.
The Brookings Farmers Market is on the 300th block of Sixth Avenue, between the Brookings Public Library and the Brookings County Courthouse. Hours are 9 a.m. to noon.
