Grease fire leads to minor injury in Brookings

BROOKINGS A kitchen fire in an apartment complex on Monday afternoon in Brookings led to minor damage to one apartment and a minor burn injury to the apartments occupant.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:57 p.m. and took place at 629 Heritage Drive, Brookings Fire Department Chief Pete Bolzer told the Brookings Register. Four units and 24 firefighters responded, he added.

A grease fire on the stove had been extinguished; however, burning grease had spilled and burned floor covering material, Bolzer said. Firefighters cooled smoldering areas and removed smoke from the building.

The apartment suffered minor firedamage, he said. The apartment occupant was treated at the scene for a minor burn to a hand.

Bolzer said personnel were at the scene for 40 minutes, with assistance being provided by the Brookings Police Department and Brookings Ambulance.

Beyond the apartment complex incident, firefighters also assisted with several other incidents between 4 and 8 p.m. Monday, including:

  • A dumpster fire at 1830 Eighth St. S.
  • A vehicle rollover at mile marker 135 on Interstate 29, 2 miles north of Brookings. The South Dakota Highway Patrol said the 31-year-old male driver sustained minor injuries in the incident, which occurred in a construction zone. Alcohol was not a factor, and the driver was using a seat belt.
  • A motorcycle vs. deer accident on 212th Street.
