The new Hillcrest and Medary elementary schools are almost ready to open their doors to students.
We will be ready for students to be in the buildings next week, Summer Schultz, district superintendent, said. Theres still those additional touches and things that we can continue to finish and finalize after school starts; but we are ready for students to come and these two contractors (Clark Drew Construction and Hausmann Construction) did an incredible job over the summer in such a tight timeframe its just amazing how its all come together so much in these last few weeks.
Demolition work on the old Medary began May 22; demolition of the old Hillcrest started June 5. Both buildings will be hosting back-to-school events this week.
We are on track, Shannon Smith, Hillcrest principal, said. We are so excited to have our Hillcrest community, families and students in the building to be able to experience this new construction project pretty exciting!
When school opens next week, Hillcrest will have an enrollment of about 330 students, while Medary should have between 340 and 350 students.
Things are on track both inside and outside, Chris Gruenhagen, Medary principal, said. I know our renovation space had a pretty tight timeline probably more work than we had weeks, but talking with our crews theyre very confident that everything will be done and ready as we welcome families back.
The first day of school in Brookings is Tuesday, Sept. 3.
