The high school football season kicked off on Friday night with plenty of action for area teams as Flandreau, Elkton-Lake Benton and Iroquois/Lake Preston earned victories on opening night.
Flandreau 21, Deuel 0
DEUEL The Flandreau Fliers opened the year with a win on the road after defeating the Deuel Cardinals on Friday night.
It was a great team win, Flandreau head coach Josh Edlund said. Coach Garrett Carr put together a great offensive game plan, we wanted to establish the run with our physical fullbacks. While the stats dont always show it, they ran really hard and executed the game plan.
Justin Klein led the Fliers in rushing with 32 yards on eight carries and Ben Ballard had six carries for 23 yards. Karter Headrick had three carries for 15 yards while Cam Flute lost one yard on three carries and Alex Poitra had one carry for 18 yards.
But Paul Parsley had a solid game, completing 4-of-9 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown and adding 11 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown.
Paul did a great job at quarterback, completing big passes in big moments and running well when his name was called, Edlund said.
Alex Poitra caught one pass for 17 yards while Micah Otto caught one pass for 15 yards, Flute caught one pass for 31 yards and Luke Sheppard caught a 15-yard touchdown with one second left in the first half.
Edlund also credited his offensive line for paving the way in the victory.
Our offensive line put in the work, Edlund said. They went toe-to-toe with Deuel and won the battle. Emmett Skorch, Tyton Peters, Gage Ballard, Willie Lone Bear and Kaden Iott all did a great job.
The Fliers’ defense also played well as Ballard had two solo tackles, an assisted tackle, an interception return for a touchdown and a fumble recovery. Kody Kneebone also had seven solo tackles, four assists and a forced fumble.
Coach Parsley had our boys ready to go, Edlund said of his defense. Not only preparing our guys well enough to put up a goose egg but also having some big turnovers in the game as well.
Flandreau will host Baltic in its second game of the season on Friday at 7 p.m.
Elkton-Lake Benton 42, Waubay-Summit 0
ELKTON The Elks scored 35 points in the first quarter as they cruised to a shutout victory over Waubay-Summit on Friday night.
Colt Beck completed 5-of-7 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. Berkeley Hemmen completed all three of his passes for 39 yards. Brady Prosch completed 1-of-2 passes for 22 yards.
Blake De Vries ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns on six attempts. Eliot Erickson ran for 78 yards and a touchdown on three attempts. Beck ran for 41 yards and a touchdown on two attempts. Brady Prosch had 15 yards on three carries. Hemmen had 11 yards on two carries. Kaleb Larson had six yards on seven carries.
Tanner Stein had two catches for 36 yards. Myles Poindexter had two catches for 34 yards. Savion Stephens had a 35-yard reception. Landon Griffith had a 22-yard reception. Dreitz had a six-yard reception.
De Vries had seven tackles. Quintin Westley had five tackles. Isaiah Olson, Ryan Coe Erickson and Stein had four tackles each. Ashton Neill and Drietz each had three tackles. Poindexter, Riley Nordmeier and Jackson Smallfield and Taiton Boersma each had two tackles. Stephens, Joseph Nibbe and Caleb Seiler each had one tackle. Stephens also recovered a fumble.
ELB will travel to Viborg-Hurley for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday.
Iroquois/Lake Preston 36, Wilmot 28
WILMOT The Sharks held off the Wolves to earn a win in their season opener on Friday night.
The game was tied at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter before the Sharks scored a pair of touchdowns to take a 28-14 lead into halftime. After a scoreless third quarter, the Wolves out-scored the Sharks 12-8 but ILP held on for the victory.
The Sharks will host Hitchcock-Tulare at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Avon 60, Colman-Egan 38
COLMAN The Pirates lasted the Hawks as the two schools battled in a shootout on Friday night.
Avon opened a big lead early as Aziah Meyer scored on a three-yard touchdown with 6:20 left in the first quarter and on a 28-yard run with 2:11 left in the first quarter.
Landon Mudder put the Pirates up 18-0 with 6:01 left in the second quarter before Sutton Bunde scored on a three-yard touchdown run with 1:09 left in the second quarter.
The Hawks got another touchdown when Hayden Pearson connected to Jackson Zwart on a five-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds left in the second quarter and Pearson threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Zwart with 11:02 left in the third quarter but Mayer swung momentum back in the Pirates direction with a 77-yard kick return for a touchdown.
Mayer added a 51-yard touchdown run with 5:01 left in the third quarter and after Pearson ripped off a 28-yard touchdown run, Mayer added a 66-yard kick return for a touchdown with 4:46 training.
Grayson Tatzloff scored from 15 yards out with 8:29 left in the fourth quarter before Pederson scored on a five-yard touchdown run with 35 seconds remaining in the game.
Pearson gained 87 yards on 15 carries with a rushing touchdown for the Hawks while Bunde had 37 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Pearson completed 10-of-20 passes for 122 yards and a pair of interceptions. Zwart caught four passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns.
Meyer ran for 161 yards on 19 carries with six touchdowns. Grayson Ratzlaff ran for 103 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown.
C-E will host Canistota at 7 p.m. Friday.
Wolsey-Wessington 38, Estelline Hendricks 22
WESSINGTON The RedHawks fell on the road to the Warbird in their season opener on Friday night. W-W took a 24-8 lead into halftime before pulling away for a 38-22 win.
Carson Reitz completed 5-of-9 passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 27 yards and a touchdown.
Wyat James had two catches for 59 yards, a touchdown and a two-point conversion.
Braxton Jongeling caught an 18-yard touchdown reception. Ethan Axtell had a catch for 12 yards and a two-point conversion reception.
Matthew McAninch had one catch for seven yards.
Regan Schwartz ran for 58 yards on 13 attempts. Cooper Faehnrich ran for 31 yards on nine attempts.
The RedHawks will have their home opener on Friday when they host Howard at 7 p.m.
