Jackrabbits pick up first victory

GREELEY, Colo. After dropping its season opener last week, the South Dakota State soccer team bounced back with a 2-0 win over Northern Colorado on Monday night.

The Jackrabbits scored a goal in both the first and second half and were able to keep the Bears off the scoreboard to pick up their first win of the season.

Adrianne Agbayni got the Jackrabbits on the board in the 26th minute. She took a pass from Katherine Jone and then had a breakaway. The goalkeeper stopped her first shot but then she got the ball back and put it into the back of the net to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead.

SDSU dominated the first half as it outshot UNC 8-1. Shots on goal were 3-1 as well. Both teams had one corner kick and the Bears had four fouls and the Jacks had three.

Mia Bosch extended SDSUs lead to 2-0 in the 52nd minute. UNCs Brooke Holmberg was called for a foul in the box and that led to a penalty kick by Bosch and she buried it to put the Jacks up two.

Later in the second half UNC had two chances in a span of eight minutes. Holmberg had the first chance and Stephanie Leckwold saved it in the bottom left of the net. Then Ava Marshall had a chance and Leckwold made a diving stop in the top left part of the net.

SDSU finished with 11 shots and five of them were on goal. UNC had three shots and all of them were on goal. The Bears had six fouls and two corner kicks. The Jacks had five fouls and three corner kicks.

Agbayni led the Jacks with four shots and all of them were on goal. Bosch had two shots and one of them was on goal. Avery Murdzek and Maleah Evans each had two shots that werent on goal. Hailee Christensen had one shot that wasnt on goal.

Leckwold played all 90 minutes as goalkeeper and she had three saves.

SDSU will play its second game of a five-game road trip on Thursday at Colorado College. That match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
