MITCHELL The Brookings Cubs were eliminated from the Class A State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Friday after a 13-6 loss to the Sioux Falls Brewers.
Brookings came into Friday with a record of 1-1 in the State Tournament after beating the Rapid City Diamondbacks and falling to the Renner Monarchs last weekend. The Cubs finished the season with a record of 15-7.
The Monarchs won the Class A tournament as they beat the Brewers 11-7 on Sunday afternoon. Dell Rapids PBR won the Class B title after beating the Platte Killer Tomatoes 3-1 on Sunday.
Friday
Sioux Falls Brewers 13, Brookings 6
The Brewers jumped out to a 7-2 lead after the first three innings and didnt look back. Each team scored two runs in the first inning.
Riley Johnson was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and then scored on a double from Sam Baier. Baier then scored on a fielders choice to make it 2-0 Sioux Falls.
The Cubs led off the bottom of the inning with back-to-back home runs to tie the game. Colin Gibson hit the first homer and Chase McDaniel followed with one of his own. Both home runs went over the left field fence.
The Brewers scored two more runs in the second. Two walks and a single Johnson loaded the bases up with one out. Baier and Sam Siegel then each drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0.
Two walks and an error loaded the bases again for the Brewers in the third. Andrew Glovich then hit a two-run single and Baier hit a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 7-2.
The Cubs got one run back in the fourth with a solo home run from Colin Gibson.
However, Sioux Falls answered with three runs in the top of the fifth. Glovich hit an RBI double and Johnson followed with a sacrifice fly. Siegel then hit his own RBI double to make it 10-3.
The Cubs scored two runs in the sixth. Jamison Honkomp and Tucker Wookey led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Wookey made it to second on a fielders choice and then scored on a single from C Gibson. Henry Hammrich stole third and then scored on a McDaniel ground out to make it 10-5. Hammrich then hit a solo home run in the eighth to cut the lead 10-6.
Joe Kolbeck came to the plate with two runners on in the ninth and hit one over the center field fence to make it 13-6. The Cubs then went down one-two-three in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
Brookings had 14 hits as a team. Colin Gibson was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and McDaniel went 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Hammrich was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Wookey and Tyler Kruetner were each 1-for-4. Jayden Gibson, Parker Winghart and Honkomp were each 1-for-5.
Cole Mahlum got the start for the Cubs and pitched the first two innings. He gave up seven runs, five earned, on two hits with seven walks and no strikeouts. Peyton Mandel pitched the final seven innings and gave up six earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Sunday
Class A championship: Renner 11, Sioux Falls Brewers 7
The Monarchs scored 10 of their 11 runs in innings three, four and five and that proved to be the difference in winning the championship game.
The Brewers led 4-0 after the first two innings. James Borges and TJ Miller each hit RBI singles in the first to make it 2-0. Baier then hit an RBI single in the second and Siegel followed with an RBI double to push the lead to four.
Renner cut the lead in half in the third. Singles from JT Mix and Jaxon Rosencranz and a walk from Dave Borchadt loaded the bases with no outs. Aiden Ladd then hit a sacrifice fly and Adam Durfee followed with an RBI single to make it 4-2.
Rosencranz then came to the plate with one out and the bases loaded in the fourth after three-straight walks. He then launched one over the left field fence to clear the bases and give Renner a 6-4 lead heading into the fourth.
The Monarchs then added four more runs in the fourth. Chaz Palmer hit an RBI single and then scored on an error to make it 8-4. Borchardt then hit a two-run single to push the lead to 10-4.
The Brewers scored a run on Kolbeck single in the sixth to make it 10-5. Durfee hit an RBI double in the seventh to make it a six-run lead again.
Charlie Dubanoski hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth and then a run scored on a double play to make it 11-7. However, the next batter flew out to left field and the Monarchs were crowned champions of Class A.
Renner had 11 hits as a team. Rosencranz was 4-for-5 with four RBIs and Durfee was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Borchadt was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Mix was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Palmer was 1-for-4 and Maddux Baggs was 1-for-5. Ladd had an RBI without a hit.
The Brewers had 14 hits as a team. Sigel was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Miller was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Kolbeck and Borges were each 1-for-4 with an RBI and Dubanoski was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Jack Sutton was 2-for-4 and Ian Strum was 1-for-4. Baier was 2-for-3.
Jeremiah Mauch started the game for the Monarchs and pitched the first two innings. He gave up four earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Jed Schmitt pitched the next six innings and got the win. He gave up three earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Brothers got the final three outs.
Sutton pitched the first three and two thirds innings for the Brewers. He gave up six earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and seven walks. Bryce Ahrendt pitched the final four and a third innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Class B championship: Dell Rapids PBR 3, Platte Killer Tomatoes 1
All of the runs were scored in the seventh inning. Platte scored a run in the top of the inning and then PBR answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Jeff Harris hit a one-out triple for the Killer Tomatoes and then scored on a two-out single from M Buitenbos.
Drew Sweeter led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and then Zach Puetz followed with a single. Sweeter was thrown out at third on a bunt from Connor Spindler. Riley Hoffman then hit a single to load the bases up and Matt Gillogly hit an RBI single to tie the game. Riley Calhoon then hit a two-run single with two outs to give PBR a 3-1 lead heading into the eighth.
Sheldon Gant hit a single to lead off the inning for Platte but then Mason Townsend hit into a double play and H Hewitt hit into a ground out to end the half inning. Puetz hit a one-out single for PBR in the bottom of the eighth and Spindler followed with a walk, but Hoffman flew out to center field to end the inning.
Grant Doom was hit by a pitch to lead off the ninth for the Killer Tomatoes. The next two batters flew out and then R Sternberg hit a single to put the tying run on. However, Buitenbos then flew out to the second baseman and PBR clinched the Class B title.
PBR had seven hits as a team. Gillogly went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Calhoon went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Puetz was 2-for-4 and Spindler was 1-for-3. Hoffman was 1-for-4.
Platte had eight hits. Buitenbos was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Sternberg was 2-for-3. Harris was 1-for-3 and Gant was 3-for-4. Seth Muth was 1-for-4.
Hoffman pitched the first four and a third innings for PBR. He gave up no runs on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Sweeter pitched two and two thirds innings and gave up one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts. Brayden Pankoken pitched the final two innings and gave up no runs and one hit.
Doom pitched a complete game for the Killer Tomatoes. He gave up three earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
