Bobcat soccer teams earn draws in season openers

SPEARFISH The Brookings soccer teams each tied with Spearfish in their season openers on Friday night. The boys score was 2-2 and the girls was 1-1.

The Bobcats were supposed to play Pierre on Saturday, but those games were postponed. Their home openers are on Tuesday as they host a doubleheader against Tea. The girls game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and the boys game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Boys

Brookings 2, Spearfish 2

The Bobcats scored two goals in the second half to earn the tie. Spearfish got on the board first with a goal on a header from a free kick in the 33rd minute.

Vincent Iyeli then tied the game with a goal in the 10th minute of the second half. That goal was assisted by Forrest Giard. Seven minutes later Spearfish put one in the back of the net to regain the lead. Brayden Love was then able to tie the game in the 38th minute of the second half to tie the game once again. That goal was assisted by Seth Vogt.

Brookings had 22 shots and 15 of them were on goal. Giard led the Bobcats with seven shots and five of them were on goal. Love had five shots and four of them were on goal. Iyeli had two shots and one of them was on goal.

Brayden Schreiber had four shots and two of them were on goal and Braylon Peters and Connor Shelden each had one shot that was on goal. Isaiah Vogt had two shots and one of them was on goal.

Girls

Brookings 1, Spearfish 1

The Spartans scored in the first half and the Bobcats were able to tie the game in the second half.

Grace Romsa scored the lone goal for Brookings. No other stats were provided.

We struggled to possess the ball in the first half, but really flipped the script in the second half and controlled the game, which resulted in the goal, said Brookings head coach Adam Juba. We had plenty of shots in the second half and will look to be more clinical with those shots so we can put more goals in.
