Five teams join Brookings Cubs, advance in Class A Tournament

BROOKINGS There was plenty of action at Bob Shelden Field over the weekend as the Sioux Falls Brewers, the Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels, the Yankton Tappers, Aberdeen Circus Sports Bar and Renner Monarchs joined the Brookings Cubs to advance to the second weekend of the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Class A State Tournament.

The tournament will continue in Mitchell on Friday. Yankton will face Aberdeen in an elimination game at Drake Field at 1 p.m., the Brewers will face the Cubs in the second elimination game at Drake Field at 3 p.m. and Renner will face the Sioux Falls Squirrels with a berth in the championship game on the line at 1 p.m. at the Cadwell Sports Complex.

The winners in the two elimination games will play each other at 11 a.m. at the Cadwell Sports Complex on Saturday with the winner playing the loser between the Sioux Falls Squirrels or Renner at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The Class A State Championship will be decided at noon at the Cadwell Sports Complex on Aug. 18.

Friday

Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels 5, Yankton 2

The Flying Squirrels chipped way and scored in each of the final five innings to defeat Yankton 5-2 in the opening game of the tournament on Friday night.

Sioux Falls opened the scoring in the top of the sixth inning when Jaden Holzer delivered a two-run single and expanded its lead on Jack Simonsens RBI single in the top of the seventh inning. Lucas Wilber added another run on an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to make it an 8-0 game but Yankton loaded the bases and scored a pair of runs on an error by Damon Baruth in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Simonsen hit a solo home run for the Flying Squirrels in the top of the ninth inning and Seth Peterson closed the game out as part of a four-inning save.

Baruth started for Sioux Falls and allowed five hits and four walks with four strikeouts over five shutout innings. Peterson allowed two unearned runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Simonsen went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI for Sioux Falls while Wilber went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Zach Dibble went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored while Holzer and Carter Brown each went 1-for-4. Connor Hurley went 1-for-5 with a run scored.

Kade Sudbeck threw eight innings for the Tappers, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Joe Gokie finished the game, allowing Simonsens home run in the ninth inning.

Lucas Kampshoff went 3-for-5 with a double for the Tappers while Dylan Ryken went 2-for-4. Shugo Kondo and Will Rauch each went 1-for-3 and Mac Ryken and Mitch Gullickson each went 1-for-5.

Sioux Falls Brewers 13, Black Hills As 3 (7 Inn.)

The Brewers pulled away late, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and five times in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the As 13-3 in seven innings via the 10-run rule.

TJ Miller put the Brewers on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning but the As answered on Chase Bowerss RBI single in the top of the second inning. Sioux Falls regained the lead when Jack Sutton scored on an error in the bottom of the second inning and expanded its lead on Ian Strums RBI single in the bottom of the third inning.

Black Hills tied the game with a run on an error and an RBI single by Seth Johnson in the top of the fourth inning but Miller put Sioux Falls back on top with his second RBI single of the game. Sutton drove in two runs on a single later in the fourth inning and the Brewers never looked back.

Ford Schroeder hit a two-run single while Sam Baier drove in a run with a double, a run scored on an error and Strum drove in a run on a single as part of the five-run sixth inning. The Brewers finished the game with RBI singles by James Borges and Sam Siegel in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Jacob Glovich started for Sioux Falls, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over six innings. Bryce Ahrendt finished the game, allowing three hits and striking out a batter in the seventh inning.

The Brewers had 14 hits in the game. Miller went 3-for-5 while Strum, Baier and Sutton each went 2-for-3. Siegel went 1-for-3. Drue Soukup and Schroeder each went 1-for-2. Borges went 1-for-1.

Braxton Kusler started for Black Hills, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits and seven walks with five strikeouts over 3.2 innings. Isaac Baldrige allowed one hit and four walks with three strikeouts over 1.1 innings. Owen Cass allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits in one inning. Bowers allowed two earned runs on three hits and three walks over 0.2 innings.

Black Hills had 12 hits in the game. Andrew Hill and Adam Deneke each went 2-for-4. Easton Ogle, Palmer Boyd and Evan Fowler each went 1-for-2. Bowers went 1-for-3. Cass and Johnson each went 1-for-4. Baldrige went 1-for-1.

Saturday

Yankton 13, Black Hills As 6

Gokie had three hits including a solo home run in the fourth inning to lead the Tappers to a 13-6 win over Black Hills on Saturday morning.

The Tappers victory was keyed by a five-run first inning. Kampshoff drove in a pair of runs with a single to start the scoring and Drew Ryken drove in a run on a fielders choice to make it 3-0. The Tappers got another run on an error before Gullickson drove in a run with a double to make it 5-0.

Black Hills got a run back on a Deneke double in the bottom of the first inning but Yankton scored twice in the top of the second, scoring a run on an error and a double by Drew Ryken.

Ogle drew a bases-loaded walk and Cass drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to help Black Hills cut the lead to 7-3 but Gokies solo blast put Yankton up 8-3 in the top of the fourth. Gokie drove in two runs with a single in the top of the sixth inning and Drew Ryken drove in another run with a single in the top of the eighth before Will Rauschs two-run single capped the scoring for the tappers in the top of the ninth inning.

Black Hills scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, coming on a Matt Hill goundout, a Deneke single and a bases-loaded walk by Johnson.

Drew Ryken started for Yankton, allowing three earned runs on three hits and four walks with two strikeouts over 1.1 innings. Gokie threw 6.2 shutout innings, allowing five hits with two strikeouts and Samuel Kompshoff finished the game, allowing three earned runs on four hits and a walk with a strikeout in the ninth inning.

Yankton had 13 hits in the win. Gokie finished 3-for-5 while Kondo also went 3-for-6. Rauch and Drew Ryken each went 2-for-5. Lucas Kampshoff went 1-for-3. Sudbeck went 1-for-4. Gullickson went 1-for-5.

Boyd started for Black Hills, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts over five innings. Parks Brigman allowed two earned runs on three hits and four walks over three innings. Baldrige allowed on earned run on two hits with a strikeout in the ninth inning.

The As had 12 hits. Hill and Adam Deneke earache went 2-for-4. Ogle, Boyd and Fowler each went 1-for-2. Bowers went 1-for-3. Cass and Johnson each went 1-for-4. Baldrige went 1-for-1.

Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels 8, Sioux Falls Brewers 3

The Flying Squirrels used a five-run seventh inning to jump ahead and finish the weekend at 2-0 with a win over the Brewers on Saturday afternoon.

Simonsen opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to give the Flying Squirrels a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the Brewers got the run back on a fielders choice in the bottom of the first inning. The Flying Squirels jumped back in front on Trevor Hurleys sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning but the Brewers tied the game when Riley Johnson scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the third inning.

The Brewers took the lead on a fielders choice in the bottom of the sixth inning before the Flying Squirrels made their move in the seventh. A two-run single by Hurley put the Flying Squirrels up 4-3 and they added to their lead with a sacrifice fly by Dylan Ades and two runs on passed balls.

Brown drove in a run with a single to score the final run of the game in the top of the ninth.

Dexter Payne started for the Flying Squirrels, allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits and a walk with three strikeouts over three innings. Peterson threw 3.2 shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk with a strikeout and Hurley got the final out of the ninth inning.

The Flying Squirrels had nine hits. Dibble (2-for-5), Gulbrandson (2-for-4) and Hurley (2-for-3) all had multi-hit games while Baruth went 1-for-3, Brown went 1-for-4 and Ades went 1-for-1.

Whitesell started the game for the Brewers, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts over six innings. Carson Askdal allowed five runs (four earned) on two hits and a walk in the seventh inning and Jack Sutton pitched the final three innings, allowing an earned run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Siegel (2-for-4), Soukup (2-for-4), Borges (2-for-4) and Miller (2-for-5) each had multi-hit games for the Flying Squirrels. Strum went 1-for-4 and Johnson went 1-for-5.

Aberdeen 6, Rapid City Diamondbacks 2

Chad Ellingson posted 13 stirkeouts as Aberdeen powered their way past the Rapid City Diamondbacks 6-2 on Saturday night.

Casey Vining opened the scoring for Aberdeen with an RBI single in the top of the first inning but Rapid City tied the game on Harrison Goods RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. Tyler Oliver put Aberdeen back in front with an RBI single in the top of the third inning and Aberdeen broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning with a run on a passed ball and a two-run triple by Easton Millar to take a 5-1 lead.

Millar scored on a wild pitch later in the seventh inning to put Aberdeen up 6-1 and Grayson Skinner drove in a run for Rapid City with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Ellingson tossed a complete game for Aberdeen, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with two walks to go with his 13 punchouts.

Aberdeen had nine hits including a 2-for-4 game from Oliver. Michael Babcock and Jesse Babcock and Jon Baker each went 1-for-3. Colton Cox and Vining each went 1-for-4. Millar and Ryan Ellingson each went 1-for-5.

Palmer Jacobs threw a complete game for Rapid City, allowing six earned runs on nine hits with three walks and 12 strikeouts.

Rapid City had eight hits. Good went 2-for-4. Hayden McGriff and Grayson Skinner each went 1-for-3. Walker Paz, Jesse Riddle and Alex Dietrich each went 1-for-4. Jed Sullivan went 1-for-5.

Sunday

Renner 7, Aberdeen 6

Renner scored the final victory of the first weekend, rallying for three runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Aberdeen 7-6 on Sunday afternoon.

Aberdeen took the lead when Jesse Babcock scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third inning but Aiden Ladd tied the game with an RBI double and Maddux Baggs drove in two runs with a single to put Renner ahead 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning.

Renner added to its lead on a Ladd sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning but Aberdeen jumped ahead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning highlighted by Vinings go-ahead single.

Vining extended Aberdeens lead with an RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Monarchs loaded the bases with walks by Chaz Palmer and JT Mix and a single by Adam Durfee. Dave Borchardt cleared the bases with a go-ahead, three-run RBI double and after walking Michael Babcock to open the ninth inning, Josh Baumgart retired the next three batters to secure the win.

Jed Schmitt started for Renner, allowing five runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Eric Brothers allowed one earned run on three hits and a walk with a strikeout in 2.2 innings and Baumgart finished the game allowing a hit and a walk with two strikeouts over the final two innings.

Renner had eight hits in the game. Borchardt went 2-for-2 and Ladd went 2-for-5. Ben Ihrke, Durfee and Baggs each went 1-for-5 and Baumgart went 1-for-4.

Joey Wollman started for Aberdeen, allowing four earned runs on six hits and four walks with six strikeouts over seven innings. WolfDon pitched a scoreless inning of relief with a strikeout and Jon Baker allowed three earned runs on two hits and three walks in the ninth inning.

Vining went 3-for-5 for Aberdeen while WolfDon went 1-for-2, Kelly Coates went 1-for-3 and Jon Baker went 1-for-4.
