Two women killed on Lake Henry in storm

KINGSBURY COUNTY The severe weather that struck in and around Brookings on Wednesday evening also took the lives of two women on Lake Henry in Kingsbury County.

The women were caught on the lake by the weather, according to a social media post by the Kingsbury County Sheriffs Office. Emergency responders found them on the shore of the lake and life-saving efforts took place there and at a nearby hospital, but it wasnt enough.

It is believed they were in the lake on their personal flotation devices when the wind picked up and they were overcome by the waves, the sheriffs office wrote on its Facebook page.

The wind just came up so fast, a representative for the sheriffs office told the Brookings Register in a phone interview on Thursday. We were just so fortunate that we had the weather spotters out, so they were able to go and assist as soon as they got called out.

The womens names have not been released, but they were from out of state and were described as being friends in their mid-60s. They were staying with relatives at a house on Lake Henry at the time of their deaths, according to the sheriffs office.

Responding agencies were the Lake Preston Fire Department, the Kingsbury County Sheriffs Office, De Smet Ambulance and first responders, Avera De Smet Memorial Hospital staffers and volunteers.
