SIOUX FALLS Brookings Bombers Red opened up the 13U State Tournament with a 5-3 win over Watertown on Thursday afternoon.
The Bombers scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and then kept the Grey Sox off of the scoreboard in the sixth to get the victory.
Each team scored a run in the second inning. Watertown led off the inning with a double and then that baserunner scored on a single.
Hayden Jones led off the bottom of the inning and reached on an error. He then advanced to second on a wild pitch and went to third on a passed ball. He then came home on an error to tie the game.
Brookings then took the lead in the third. Brady Nutter reached on an error with one out and advanced to second on the play. He then scored on a double from Dario McSweeney to make it 2-1. McSweeney then came home on a single from Cooper Drawdy to make it 3-1 heading into the fourth.
The Grey Sox cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth. They led off the inning with a double and that runner scored on a ground out. Watertown would then tie the game in the fifth. A one-out triple put a runner on third and then a single made it a 3-3 game heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Nutter reached on an error to begin the bottom of the inning and McSweeney followed with a single. Drawdy was then intentionally walked to load the bases up with one out and Jones came to the plate. He hit one to center field that dropped and both Nutter and McSweeney scored to give the Bombers a two-run lead heading into the final inning. Watertown got one runner on with one out but fielders choice and a strikeout ended the game.
The Bombers had five hits as a team. McSweeney was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jones was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Drawdy was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Jennings Huntimer was 1-for-2.
Drawdy pitched a complete game for the Bombers. He gave up three earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
Brookings will take on Yankton on Friday at 5 p.m. and Pierre on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
