Brookings Bombers Black sweeps Yankton at Bob Shelden

BROOKINGS The Brookings Bombers Black 14U team improved 38-8 on the season after sweeping a doubleheader against Yankton on Wednesday night at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings won the first game 10-1 and followed that with a 7-3 victory in game two. The Bombers will close out the regular season on Friday night in Watertown with another doubleheader that starts at 5 p.m. They will then play in the State Tournament in Sioux Falls Aug. 1-4.

Game 1: Brookings 10, Yankton 1

Nolan Krogman pitched the first six innings in game one and gave up just one hit and one earned run while striking out 10 batters and walking just two. Mason Diers then got the final three outs and had a strikeout and two walks.

Brookings led 2-0 after the first three innings. Baker Hanson walked with two outs in the first inning and then advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third. He then came home on an error by the catcher to make it 1-0. Jude Meendering reached on an error in the third and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

The Bombers doubled their lead in the fourth. Noah Lease walked, Dixon Dauer reached on an error and Kooper Henderson singled to load the bases up with no outs. Lease scored on a fielders choice from Andrew Heinze and Dauer scored on a bases loaded walk to make it 4-0.

Brookings then scored two more runs in the fifth. Hanson drew another walk to lead off the inning and scored on a wild pitch. Lease walked and scored on a Henderson single to push the lead to 6-0 heading into the sixth.

Yankton scored its lone run of the game on an RBI single in the top of the sixth. The Bombers answered with 10 runs in the bottom of the inning.

Ben Schulte hit a single to lead off the inning and then scored on a Hanson single. Hanson came home on a single from Dauer and Grant Horn hit an RBI single as well to make it 9-1. Meendering then drew a bases loaded walk to make it 10-1 heading into the final half inning.

Brookings had seven hits. Hanson was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Henderson was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Horn was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Dauer was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Schulte was 1-for-5. Meendering had two RBIs with no hits. Heinze had an RBI as well.

Game 2: Brookings 7, Yankton 3

Each team had seven hits but the Bombers drew nine walks and stole 11 bases to lead them to the win in game two.

Brookings led 2-0 at the end of the first inning. Meendering led off the inning with a walk and then stole second base. He was thrown out advancing to home but Hanson reached first on the play. Hanson then stole second and scored on a Krogman single to make it 1-0. Krogman then scored on an error to extend the lead to two runs.

Yankton cut the lead in half in the top of the third with an RBI double. Brookings got that run back in the bottom of the inning. Schulte walked to begin the inning and stole second and advanced to third on an error. He then scored on a steal of home to make it 3-1 heading into the fourth.

The Lakers tied the game in the top of the fourth. They scored a run on a wild pitch and then an RBI single made it 3-3.

Brookings regained the lead in the fifth. Lease walked to begin the inning and then scored on a triple from Diers to make it 4-3. Diers came home on a single from Horn and Schulte hit an RBI single to make it 6-3 heading into the sixth.

The Bombers scored an insurance run in the sixth. Krogman singled to lead off the inning and then stole second and third. He then scored on a ground out from Dauer to make the final 7-3.

Schulte and Krogman were each 2-for-3 with an RBI. Horn went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Diers went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Dauer had an RBI without a hit.

Meendering pitched a complete game for the Bombers. He gave up three earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
