Brookings Chutes go 4-2 at Scheels Invitational

FARGO, N.D. The Brookings Junior Legion Chutes went 4-2 at the Scheels Invitational in Fargo this weekend.

The Chutes played two games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They won their first three games of the weekend and then went 1-2 in the final three. Brookings is now 17-9 on the season and hosts a doubleheader with Marshall on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Friday

Brookings 12, Renner 3

The Chutes led off the tournament with a strong offensive performance as they had 13 hits.

Brookings led 2-0 at the end of the first. Tate Christopherson walked to lead off the inning and then scored on an error. Gavin Hammrich reached on the error and then scored on a single from Jay Harris.

The Chutes then pushed the lead to 9-0 in the third. Jase Bauer was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Hammrich followed with a double. Talon Hyden then hit both runners home with a triple and he scored on a single from Maxten Jensen. Will Conrad then hit a double and Christopherson followed with a two-run single to make it 8-0. The final run of the inning came from a Bauer RBI single.

Runs from a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly and a ground out cut the lead to 9-3 in the top of the fourth. However, Brookings got those three runs back in the bottom of the inning.

Three straight singles from Hyde, Tane Friedrich and Jensen loaded the bases up with one out. Hyde scored on a single from Conrad. Kysin Reuer ran for Friedrich and Breck Wilson ran for Jensen. Both of them scored on a fielders choice and that made the final 12-3.

Christopherson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Conrad was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Hyde was 2-for-3 with two RBIS and Bauer and Harris were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Friedrich was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Nolan Wagner pitched a complete game for the Chutes. He gave up three earned runs on two hits and had two strikeouts and four walks.

Brookings 8, Bismarck Sens 7

An RBI single from Harris tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and Nolan Wagner scored on an error to complete a five-run comeback and give the Chutes another victory.

Bismarck led 5-0 after three innings. Their first run came on a balk in the second inning. Two RBI singles and a two-run single in the third made it 5-0.

Brookings scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Wagner and Harris hit back-to-back singles with one out. Wagner scored on a ground out from Conrad and Harris came home on a wild pitch to make it 5-2.

The Chutes then cut then tied the game in the fifth. Cooper Schneider was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and Bauer followed with a double. Both runners then scored on a single from Hammrich to make it a one-run game. Hammrich then stole home to make it 5-5.

Bismarck scored two runs in the top of the sixth. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs and then a run came home on a wild pitch. Another run scored on a ground out, making it 7-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

The Chutes got one run back in the bottom of the inning. Conrad walked to lead off the inning and then advanced to third on a single from Christopherson. He then scored on a sacrifice fly from Bauer. That one run proved to be big as it allowed the Chutes to complete the comeback with two runs in the seventh.

The Chutes had eight hits as a team. Harris was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Schneider was 2-for-3. Bauer and Hammrich were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Wagner was 1-for-2 and Christopherson was 1-for-4. Conrad had two RBIs without a hit.

Harris pitched the first two and two thirds innings and gave up five earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and five walks. Schneider pitched the final four and a third and gave up two earned runs on two hits with three walks.

Saturday

Brookings 10, Regina 2

The Chutes scored in every inning in their first game on Saturday.

They led 3-0 after the first inning. Back-to-back singles from Christopherson and Schneider and a walk from Bauer loaded the bases up with no outs. All three runners scored on multiple fielders choice and Brookings took a three-run lead into the second.

Kysin Reuer then scored on an error in the second to push the lead to 4-0. Wagner then scored on a wild pitch in the third to make it 5-0.

Brookings then added two more runs in the fourth. Schneider hit a one-out single and then scored on a Bauer single. Bauer then scored on a passed ball to make it 7-0.

Regina scored two runs on a single in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-2 but Brookings answered with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Reuer and Christopherson led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Reuer scored on a double from Schneider and Christopherson came home on a ground out from Bauer. Schneider then scored on a Harris ground out for the final run of the game.

Bauer was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Schneider was 3-for-4. Christopherson and Reuer were each 2-for-3. Harris had two RBIs without a hit and Wagner had an RBI.

Hyde pitched a complete game for the Chutes. He gave up two earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Fargo 15, Brookings 3

Fargo scored eleven runs in the first inning and didnt look back, handing Brookings its first loss of the season.

The first two runs came from a hit batter and a walk with the bases loaded. An RBI single, a run from an error and a sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 5-0. Three more bases loaded walks and a two-run single made it 10-0. The final run of the inning came from a wild pitch.

They added three more runs in the second. The first two runs came from a ground out and a passed ball. Then an RBI double made it 14-0 heading into the third.

Brookings got on the board in the top of the third. Ryder Andreson hit an RBI single and Jay Harris followed with an RBI single of his own. Christopherson then hit an inside the park home run in the fourth to make it 14-3. Fargo scored its final run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.

The Chutes had seven hits as a team. Christopherson, Anderson and Harris were all 1-for-2 with an RBI. Bauer was 2-for-2, Conrad was 1-for-1 and Friedrich was 1-for-2.

Sunday

Brookings 5, Bismarck Americans 4

A Bases loaded walk to Wagner in the seventh inning allowed the Chutes to win in walk off fashion in their first game on Sunday.

The Chutes led 4-0 after the first inning. Christopherson singled, Schneider walked and Bauer reached on an error to load the bases with nobody out. Christopherson scored on a Hyde single. Jensen ran for Bauer and both he and Hyde scored on a Friedrich single. Conrad then walked with the bases loaded to make it a four-run game going into the second.

Bismarck scored its first run of the game on a ground out in the fourth. They then tied the game in the sixth with an RBI double and two runs from an error.

Bauer reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the seventh and stole second. He then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Hyde and Bismarck decided to intentionally walk the next two batters, setting up the game-winning walk from Wagner.

Friedrich was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Hyde was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jensen was 1-for-1, Reuer was 1-for-2 and Christopherson was 1-for-3.

Breck Wilson started the game for the Chutes and pitched five innings. He gave up three earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Conrad pitched the final two innings and gave up one unearned run on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Kindred (ND) 11, Brookings 6

Kindred scored seven runs in the final three innings to hand Brookings a loss in its final game of the weekend.

Kindred scored the first four runs of the game in the bottom of the second. The first two runs came on a fielders choice and an error. Then a run from a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly made it 4-0 heading into the third.

Brookings got two runs back in the top of the third. Conrad led off the inning with a single and then scored on an error. Schneider reached on the error and then scored on a double from Bauer to make it 4-2.

The Chutes then took the lead in the top of the fourth as they scored four runs. Friedrich was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Harris followed with a single. Jensen then reached on an error to load the bases up. Both Friedrich and Harris then scored on a Conrad single. Wilson ran for Jensen and both he and Conrad scored on an error to make it 6-4.

Kindred immediately tied the game back up with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning. They then took the lead with a two-run single. Two RBI singles in the fifth then pushed their lead to 10-6 and another RBI single in the sixth made it 11-6, which was the final.

Brookings had seven hits. Bauer was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Conrad was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Harris was 2-for-4 and Hammrich was 1-for-4. Christopherson had two RBIs without a hit and Schneider had an RBI as well.
