BROOKINGS A residential fire on June 13 in Brookings has left a family without its home, but no injuries were reported in the incident at 2020 Iowa Street.
Five fire apparatus and 25 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, where an aggressive combination fire attack was utilized to bring the fire under control, Brookings Fire Department Chief Pete Bolzer wrote in a news release. The fire was contained to the room of origin and an adjacent hallway, but smoke and heat damage were evident throughout the main floor of the residence.
The displaced family is being assisted by Brookings Property Rentals, the Red Cross and The Salvation Army, according to the release. Also, in a bit of good news, firefighters were able to rescue the familys cat from a bedroom.
Bolzer said theres no damage estimate in the incident, which was reported at 11:43 a.m., and that an investigation into the fires cause is underway. Firefighters were able to clear the scene at 2:25 p.m.
In addition to the fire department, Brookings Ambulance and the Brookings Police Department also provided aid at the scene.
The Brookings Fire Department extends its gratitude to all responding agencies for their swift action and cooperation, Bolzer wrote.
