MITCHELL The Brookings Bombers Black 14U baseball team hit the road, splitting a doubleheader with Mitchell on Sunday afternoon. The Bombers lost the first game 9-2 but rebounded to win the second game 22-2.
The Bombers are now 10-3 on the season and will travel to Pierre for a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 5 p.m.
Game 1: Mitchell 9, Brookings 2
The Bombers offense couldnt get going as Mitchell took the opening game of Sundays doubleheader.
Mitchell got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Bailor Kristensen drove in a run on a double. Mitchell got two more runs in the bottom of the third inning when Gage Schmidt scored on an error and Ian Weber drove in a run with a single to make it 3-0.
Mason Diers led off the top of the third with a double and later scored on Ben Schutes double but Mitchell responded with two runs in the bottom of the third coming on sacrifice flies by Schmidt and Matt Haring.
Jude Meendering delivered a one-out single and was later driven in by Dixon Dauers RBI single in the top of the fourth inning but the Bombers couldnt keep Mitchell off the board, getting two runs from RBI singles by Kristensen and Ethan Hegg in the bottom of the fourth inning and two more runs on a Jack Massey triple and a sacrifice fly by Weber.
Baker Hanson started the game for the Bombers, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks with a strikeout in two innings. Eli Ellsworth allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and a walk with a strikeout over 1.1 innings. Grant Horn allowed two earned runs on three hits with a strikeout over two innings and Kooper Henderson walked two batters and struck out one while getting the final two outs of the sixth inning.
Meendering went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored. Schulte went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Dauer went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Diers went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Noah Lease walked once and stole a base.
Game 2: Brookings 22, Mitchell 2 (5 innings)
The Bombers bats woke up in the second game, scoring a run in every inning on the way to a 22-2 win that ended in the fifth inning via the 10-run rule.
Meendering singled to lead off the game and scored on an error for the first run of the game. Nolan Krogman drove in a run with a double before Dixon Dauer drove in a run on a ground out and Hanson scored on a wild pitch to give the Bombers a 4-0 lead.
Mitchell got a run back on a bases-loaded walk by Jett Krantz but Meendering started another rally with a one-out double and scored on a Schulte single to put the Bombers up 5-1. Hanson drove in a run with a single later in the second inning to make it 6-1 before the Bombers added two runs in the top of the third inning.
Henderson led off the third inning with a single before scoring on Grant Wipf’s double and Krogman drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk to make it an 8-1 game.
Horn led off the top of the fourth inning and stole second base before scoring on Lincoln Helmbolts RBI single. Wipf scored on a wild pitch later in the inning and the Bombers scored three runs on errors to take a 13-1 lead.
The top of the fifth inning began with a single by Henderson, a walk by Wipf and a single by Helmbolt before Meendering drove in a run with a single. Jace Jaacks drove in two runs with a single before Krogman and Hanson each drove in runs with singles. Horn drew a bases loaded walk while Henderson, Wipf and Meendering each drove in runs with singles to cap the nine-run inning.
Mitchell scored the final run of the game on Heggs RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Meendering earned the win on the mound allowing an unearned run on a hit and three walks with five strikeouts over four innings. Dauer allowed an earned run on a hit and a walk with a strikeout.
Meendering went 4-for-4 with a double, a walk, four runs scored and three RBI. Henderson went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Helmbolt went 3-for-4 with a run scored, a stolen base and an RBI.
Schulte went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Krogman went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, three runs scored and three RBI. Hanson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Wipf went 2-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored and two RBI.
Jaacks went 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Dauer went 1-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Horn went 1-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base, two runs scored and an RBI.
