Volga ready to rock ‘n’ roll for Old Timers Day

BROOKINGS A fun weekend to get people out and about and to enjoy the community.

Thats how Lindsey Grabow, a member of the Old Timers Day Committee which plans and puts on the annual June event in Volga, bills the day, which actually goes over four days: beginning today and ending Sunday evening.

From 11:30 a.m to 1 p.m. today, theres the Bankstar cookout, at the businesss new location on U.S. Highway 14. And the good times continue to roll, from 5:15 to 7 p.m. with the Volga Business Network Mixer at the Schade Winery.

Come Friday theres the all-day City-Wide Rummage Sales. Follow that, from 7 p.m. to dusk, with Rock n Roll at Meadow Creek.

Its just a big turnout party, Grabow explained. Weve got food trucks, yard games, fireworks at dusk, just a great gathering for a lot of people to get together for the evening. Also throw into the mix music by Keith King and free ice cream, compliments of The Volga Tribune.

Come Saturday, which is the real and original Old Timers Day, it all comes together: starting at 7:30 to 10 a.m. with the Legion Pancake Feed and ending with the Volga Firemens Street Dance, which goes from 9 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday.

In between, all on Saturday, theres the Race at Your Own Pace, followed by the parade at 11 a.m., a mainstay each year and a moveable feast with its always different theme. This year its Rock n Roll.

We did a poll on our Facebook page and that was what the community members and people who participated in the poll decided, Grabow explained, adding that people taking part in the parade can dress and decorate their floats in keeping with the theme. It gives them an idea if they want to go off that and participate in it. Its open to interpretation and however people want to go about it. They can do whatever they please.

Post-parade activities start at noon in Doc and Roma Peeke Park and include: food trucks; craft vendors; Oak Lake String Band; and the volleyball tournament. Add to these happenings the Kiddie Tractor Pull, on Kasan Avenue in front of the auditorium.

Finally, its 9 p.m. and time to wrap up the days fun and frolic with what Grabow called kind of the main big thing: The Volga Firemens Street Dance.

Billed as a live rock and roll show, it features Eclipse Party Band. This is a must-be-21-to-attend gathering. Admission is $15. Coolers are encouraged no glass. Closing time is 1 a.m. Sunday.

Now its wind-down time. However, free swimming at the pool, which has been going all weekend, continues. And the County Museum is again open.

Finally, 2024 OTD ends with music and praise, hosted by First Reformed Church at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Sioux Valley Performing Arts Center.
