Brookings Bombers Black dominates doubleheader against Mitchell

BROOKINGS The Brookings Bombers Black 14U team improved to 9-2 on the season after a doubleheader sweep of Mitchell on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.

The Bombers dominated the two games, winning the first game 10-0 in six innings and then taking the game 21-6 in four innings. Brookings will play a doubleheader against Mitchell again on Sunday but it will be on the road. The first game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

Game 1: Brookings 10, Mitchell 0 (6 inn.)

Brookings gave up just two hits and Mitchell had six errors in the game, which led to the 10-run rule victory for the Bombers.

The Bombers scored one run in the first inning. Ben Schulte hit a one-out single and then stole second. He then came home to score on a Baker Hanson single to make it 1-0.

Brookings added two runs in the third. Jude Meendering walked with out and then scored on an error with two outs. Nolan Krogman was the one to reach on the error and he scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

The Bombers scored five runs in the fourth. Singles from Kooper Henderson and Grant Horn and a walk from Lincoln Helmbolt loaded the bases with one out. The first run of the inning scored on a wild pitch and Meendering then hit an RBI single to make it 5-0. Krogman hit a two-run double and Schulte scored on a Hanson ground out to make it 8-0 heading into the fifth.

Brookings then ended the game in the sixth. Meendering reached on an error with one out and stole second and advanced to third on an error. He was then hit home on Schulte single and Schulte came around to score on a Hanson single and that ended the game.

The Bombers had eight hits. Hanson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Krogman was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Meendering and Schulte were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Noah Lease, Henderson and Horn were all 1-for-3.

Krogman pitched a complete game for the Bombers. He gave up just two hits and had 10 strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Brookings 21, Mitchell 6 (4 inn.)

Seven runs in the second inning and 10 runs in the fourth inning allowed the Bombers to end the game via the 15-run rule in the second game.

The Bombers scored two runs in the first. Meendering hit a sacrifice fly and Hanson scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

Eli Ellsworth led off the second with a double and scored on a steal of home. Hanson and Mason Diers hit an RBI single and a two-run single, respectively. Hanson scored on the throw on Diers hits and it was 7-0 Bombers with one out. Ellsworth was walked with the bases loaded and Jace Jaacks scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-0 heading into the third.

All six of Mitchells runs came in the top of the third. Brookings responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Lease was walked to lead off the inning and scored on a double from Krogman. Krogman then made his way home on a ground out from Hanson, making it 11-6 heading into the fourth.

Brookings was then able to end the game in the fourth as the Bombers scored 10 runs. Henderson and Jaacks were walked to begin the inning. Henderson scored on a ground out and Jaacks scored on an Andrew Hove single. Lease then hit a single and both he and Hove scored on a Krogman single to make it 15-6.

Krogman scored on an error and Garret Wipf hit an RBI single to make it 17-6. Hanson scored on a wild pitch and Wipf scored on an error. Two more runs then came in to score on another error and that ended the game due to the 15-run rule.

Brookings had 10 hits. Krogman was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Diers was 1-for-1 with three RBIs. Hanson was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Ellsworth was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Wipf and Hove were each 1-for-2 with an RBI. Lease 1-for-1.

Diers pitched the first two and two thirds innings. He gave up five earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Helmbolt then gave up one unearned run on one hit with two walks. Ellsworth pitched the final inning and a third and gave up no hits with one strikeout.
