The lowdown on mowing in Brookings

The city of Brookings along with its council have a much-appreciated direction with our natural environment.

The public also has an interest in how our money is being spent. An analysis of where the city mows would be great for both sides.

A conservative estimate of total mowing costs is $50 an acre and land that is mowed is done a minimum of four times each summer.

Looking at some of the spots we mow are:

  • The Nature Park. We currently mow 10-foot swaths next to the main paths, 3-foot swaths next to secondary paths, several lawn spaces that are never used, around the Outdoor Adventure Center and the Parking Lots. Allyn Frerichs designed it as a Nature Park.
  • We currently mow 10 foot swaths next to the Frerichs Bike Trail.
  • Extensive acres on 32nd Avenue south of the Nature Park.
  • Several acres along the Medary dirt road west of the soccer fields.
  • No rough at the golf course
  • The Larson Park disx golf course are a few examples.

If esthetics is an issue there many perennials that remain short. I have passed these thoughts along to the appropriate city employees and councilors. As a community lets mow less, lets save the planet and lets move the money to a productive project.
