Brookings Cubs rally late to take down Dell Rapids PBR

BROOKINGS A six-run eighth inning allowed the Brookings Cubs to rally to a 9-5 victory over Dell Rapids PBR on Sunday night.

The Cubs trailed 5-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth and the six runs gave the Cubs their fourth win of the season as they improved to 4-1.

Brookings took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Tyler Kruetner led off the inning with a double and then he came around to score on a Rhett Zelinsky single. PBR answered with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second to tie the game.

Dell Rapids then took the third. PBR scored a run on an error and another run on a passed ball to make it 3-1.

The Cubs put together a two-out rally in the fifth to tie things back up. Joey McMacken singled to begin the inning and Henry Hammrich walked with one out. Zelinsky then hit a double to center field and both runners came around to score to make it 3-3 heading into the sixth.

PBR loaded the bases up with nobody out and scored a run on a wild pitch. But the Cubs were able to get out of the inning with any further damage. Dell Rapids did add another run in the seventh on an RBI single, making it 5-3 heading into the eighth.

Jamison Honkomp and Noel Burgos started the rally by drawing back-to-back walks with one out. Zach Shastay then hit a two-out two-run triple and Justin Cofell followed with an RBI single to give the Cubs a 6-5 lead. Cofell scored on a passed ball and two more runs scored on an error by the second baseman to make it 9-5 heading into the ninth.

Shastay pitched in the ninth and gave up a one-out single but then struck out the next batter and forced a ground out to get the third out and give the Cubs the win.

Brookings had 10 hits as a team. Zelinsky was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Shastay was 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Cofell was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Honkomp and Burgos were each 1-for-3. Kruetner and Luke Adelman were each 1-for-5.

Jake Ammann got the start for the Cubs and pitched the first six innings. He gave up four unarmed runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks. Craig Lasley pitched the next two innings and gave up one earned run on four hits. Shastay pitched the final two innings and gave up no runs on one hit with four strikeouts and no walks.

The Cubs play at Volga on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
