Brookings Bombers Red splits pair of games at Watertown Coke Tournament

WATERTOWN The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team split a pair of games at the Watertown Coke Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Bombers are now 4-4 on the season and will return to action when they travel to Brandon Valley on Wednesday night.

Watertown 10, Brookings 9

The Bombers had a solid offensive effort but dropped the first of two games at the tournament, losing to Watertown on Saturday morning.

The Grey Sox struck first with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning but Brookings began to claw back in the top of the third. Carter Nielsen and Griffin Streich were each hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Mason Burghardt delivered a one-out, two run double to put the Bombers on the board.

Cooper Drawdy and Mason Burzlaff each drew walks later in the third inning before Burghardt scored on a passed ball to cut the lead to 7-3 and Ty Delbridge led off the top of the fourth with a walk before stealing second base and advancing to third on a wild pitch to score on Nielsens groundout to make it a 7-4 game.

Burghardt, Drawden and Hayden Smidt each singled to lead off the top of the fifth inning before Burzlaff delivered a two-run single to bring the Bombers within 7-6. Ty Johnson drove in a run on a groundout to tie the game at 7-7 and Burzlaff scored on a passed ball to give the Bombers an 8-7 lead.

Watertown tied the game on a single in the bottom of the fifth inning but Burzlaff drove in Dario McSweeney to give Brookings a 9-8 lead in the top of the seventh inning. The Grey Sox scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning, however, to come away with the win.

Delbridge started the game for Brookings, allowing seven runs (two earned) on one hit and six walks with two strikeouts in one inning. Johnson pitched in relief, allowing two earned runs on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts over 4.2 innings.

Burghardt went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI. Drawdy went 2-for-2 with two walks, a stolen base and a run scored. Burzlaff went 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and two RBI. Delbridge drew a walk and stole a base and McSweeney stole a base and scored twice.

Brookings 10, Harrisburg 0

The Bombers scored a run in all four innings as they shut out the Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

Brookings got its first run in the bottom of the first inning when McSweeney reached on an error and stole second base. After advancing to thor base on a passed ball, McSweeney scored on a single by Burzlaff to put the Bombers on the board.

Jennings Huntimer led off the bottom of the second with a walk and stole second base before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Huntimer scored on an error in the next at-bat and Nielsen drove in a run to make it 3-0 in favor of the Bombers.

The rally continued when McSweeney was hit by a pitch with one out before Nielsen scored on an error. Burghardt drove in a run with a single before Drawdy walked and Burzlaff drove in a run with a groundout to put the Bombers up 6-0.

Johnson reached on an error with one out to start a rally in the bottom of the third inning before stealing second base and scoring on a Nielsen single to give Brookings a 7-0 lead and the Bombers scored one run on an error and two runs on a Johnson single to finish the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Drawdy earned the win on the mound, allowing two hits and four walks with five strikeouts over four shutout innings.

Nielsen went 2-for-2 with a run scored, three stolen bases and two RBI. Burghardt went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Burzlaff went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Johnson went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs and three RBI. McSweeney stole a base and scored twice. Drawdy walked twice, stole a base and scored a run. Jones drew a walk and scored a run. Grayson Wagner walked once.
