Bombers win two of three games at Coke Tournament

WATERTOWN The Brookings Bombers Red 14U baseball team won two of three games at the Watertown Coke Tournament over the weekend, defeating Marshall Black and Brandon Valley on Saturday but falling to Yankton on Sunday.

The Bombers are now 7-2 on the season and will return to action when they host Mitchell for a doubleheader at Bob Shelden Field in Brookings on Wednesday beginning at noon.

Saturday

Brookings 5, Marshall Black 4

Marshall scored a pair of runs on a single by Braedyn VanMeveren and a run on a Jack Bly single in the bottom of the first inning and scored another run on a fielders choice to take a 4-0 lead after two innings.

Brookingss rally started when Nolan Krogman walked to lead off the top of the fourth inning and Baker Hanson reached after getting hit by a pitch. With two men on, Mack Nelson drove in both runners with a single to cut the lead in half.

Dixon Dauer grounded out and Jace Jaacks struck out for the first two outs of the inning but Grant Wipf and Eli Ellsworth both drove in runs with singles to tie the game at 4-4.

The Bombers took the lead on a double by Hanson in the top of the fifth inning and Jude Meendering finished the game allowing four earned runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts over six innings to earn the win.

Meendering went 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base. Schulte went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases. Krogaman went 1-for-2 with a triple, a walk and two stolen bases. Hanson went 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Nelson went 1-for-2 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored.

Dauer went 1-for-3 with a stolen base. Wipf went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Ellsworth went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Brookings 14, Brandon Valley 0

The Bombers picked up their second win of the weekend by scoring 14 runs in a shutout over Brandon Valley on Saturday afternoon.

Schulte hit a one-out triple to begin a rally in the bottom of the first inning and scored on an RBI single by Krogman for the first run of the game. Krogman and Hanson each scored on errors later in the first inning to give Brookings a 3-0 lead.

Brookings put together another rally in the second innings that began with a Lincoln Helmbolt walk. Ellsworth reached on an error and Meendering walked to load the bases for Schulte, who drove in a pair of runs with a double to put the Bombers up 5-0.

Krogman drove in two more runs with a single before Hanson drove in another run with a double to make it an 8-0 game.

The Bombers added two more runs on errors and a third run on a sacrifice fly by Ellsworth to hold an 11-0 lead after two innings. Brookings added three more runs on a Hanson triple, an error and a wild pitch to close the game out in the bottom of the third inning.

Schulte earned the win on the mound, allowing one run and a walk with five strikeouts over four shutout innings.

Krogman went 3-for-3 with a stolen base, three runs scored and three RBI. Hanson went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, a stolen base, two RBI and three runs scored. Schulte went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and two RBI. Wipf went 1-for-2 with a walk.

Meendering walks with a run scored. Helmbolt walked twice with a stolen base and a run scored.

Sunday

Yankton 4, Brookings 3

Yankton scored a run on Chase Cooleys sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning but Brookings got a run back in the bottom of the first. Meendering led off with a walk before stealing second base to get into scoring position and stole third base before an error allowed him to score and tie the game.

The Lakers took the lead back in the top of the third inning when Jackson Kudera scored on a passed ball and Lynij Welch drove in a run with a single but the Bombers chipped into the lead with another rally in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Krogman doubled to lead off the fourth and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After back-to-back strikeouts put two outs on the board, Dauer walked before Krogman scored on another wild pitch to cut the lead down to 3-2.

But both teams exchanged a run in the sixth inning with the Lakers scoring on a Sawyer Maibaum single and the Bombers getting a run on a fielders choice and Dauer lined out with the tying run on third base to end the game.

Hanson allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks with seven strikeouts over six innings.

Krogman went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Hanson went 1-for-2 with a walk. Hanson went 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base. Andrew Heinze went 1-for-2. Meendering walked once, stole two bases and scored twice. Dauer walked once and stole a base.
