Girl Scout troop in Brookings honored for raising awareness about disabilities

The Brookings fifth-grade Girl Scouts Junior Troop 40950 earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award for their Disability Awareness Project. Troop members include Kjersten Johnson, Mariah Kruid, Riann Mullen, Brenna Nelsen, Nora Trygstad and Ella Watrel.

The Girl Scouts created video content and related activity bins for each day of the Disability Awareness Week at the Brookings Camelot Intermediate School on March 11-15. They provided awareness information for students about autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, hearing impairment, vision impairment and ADHD. Hands-on simulation activities were created for all 22 classrooms of fourth and fifth graders so that each student could experience different disabilities. The kits and videos were designed to be used for many years during Disability Awareness Week at Camelot. The troops Girl Scout cookie sales were utilized to fund the project. The Girl Scouts expressed gratitude to all of their cookie sales customers who made this project possible!

The Girl Scout Bronze Award is in the highest Girl Scout award for junior-level Girl Scouts. Girls earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award by completing a journey, and then creating a Take Action project based on their observations of a local issue. As the girls pursue their project, they put the Girl Scout promise and law into action. They also gain an understanding of the wider world by discussing how others may experience the same problem that their project helped resolve.
