Bombers split weekend doubleheader with Marshall

BROOKINGS The Brookings Bombers Black 14U team split a doubleheader against Marshall (Minn.) Orange at Bob Shelden Field on Friday night. The Bombers dropped the first game by a score of 7-5 and won the second game by a score of 3-2.

The Bombers will return to action when they travel for a doubleheader against Brandon Valley on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Marshall 7, Brookings 5

The Bombers and Marshall remained scoreless for the first two innings before Marshall plated a pair of runs on a lineout and a single in the top of the fourth inning. Ben Schulte led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a triple and scored on Baker Hansons groundout to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Bombers used a two-out rally to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, which began when Andrew Heinze was hit by a pitch. Jude Mendeering tied the game with a double that drove in Heinze in the next at bat before Schulte hit his second triple of the game to give Brookings a 3-2 lead.

Marshall tied the game with a run in the top of the sixth inning and scored four times in the top of the seventh to break the game open. Down 7-3, Dixon Dauer and Grant Horn led off the bottom of the seventh with singles before Heinze drove in a run with a single of his own to make it a 7-4 game.

Jaacks and Heinze moved up a base on a passed ball before Meendering and Schulte both walked to make it 7-5 but Kooper Henderson struck out and Nolan Krogman popped out to end the game with the bases loaded.

Hanson started the game for the Bombers, allowing six runs (four earned) on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Henderson pitched an inning in relief, allowing one earned run on one hit.

Schulte went 2-for-3 with two triples, a walk, a run scored and two RBI. Krogman went 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Heinze went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Meendering went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Mason Diers went 1-for-3. Dixon Dauer went 1-for-3 with a run scored and Grant Horn went 1-for-3.

Game 2: Brookings 3, Marshall 2 (11 innings)

Marshall scored a run in the top of the first inning but Brookings responded with Meenderings lead-off triple and Hansons two-out RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the first.

The game turned into a pitching duel from there as Meendering went eight innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits with seven strikeouts. Eli Ellsworth came on in relief and allowed four hits and a walk with a strikeout over three innings until Marshall took the lead on an RBI groundout in the top of the 11th.

Noah Lease drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the 11th inning before advancing to second base on Horns single. Lease scored from second base on Dauers single to tie the game and Dauer moved up to third base as the winning run on the throw home.

After Henderson was intentionally walked, Andrew Hove grounded into a fielders choice that allowed Horn to score the game-winning run.

Meendering went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in the win. Horn also went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Dauer went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Hanson went 1-for-4 with a walk. Hove went 1-for-5 with an RBI. Diers went 1-for-4. Hanson went 1-for-5. Krogman drew a walk.
