SIOUX FALLS The Brookings Cubs dropped their first game of the season on Thursday night as they fell to the defending state champion Sioux Falls Brewers 7-2.
Sioux Falls jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first three innings and were able to keep the Cubs at arms length the rest of the way.
The Brewers led off the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases up with nobody out. The next batter grounded out to Noel Burgos at second base and he threw it to Parker Winghart who then threw it to first. The ball went past the first baseman and two runs scored but the Cubs were able to get the batter out trying to advance to second.
The Brewers added three more runs in the third. They hit a two-run home run with nobody out and then an RBI double made it 5-0 heading into the fourth.
Brookings scored its first run in the fifth. Luke Adelman singled to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a walk. He made it to third on a ground out and scored on a passed ball to make it 5-1.
A run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth pushed the Brewers lead back to five, but the Cubs cut it back to four in the top of the sixth. Rhett Zelkinsky led off the inning with a single and then stole second. He made his way to third on a single from Noah Buss and scored on a single from Adelman to make it 6-2.
A bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth made it 7-2 and neither team scored the rest of the way.
Brookings had nine hits as a team. Adelman was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Buss and Zelinsky were each 2-for-4 and Brurgos and Winghart were each 1-for-5. Jamison Honkomp was 1-for-1.
Jake Amman started the game for the Cubs and picked up the loss after four innings of work. He gave up five earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Daniel Messerli pitched the next two innings and gave up two earned runs on one hit with one strikeout and five walks. Cole Mahlum pitched the final two innings and did not give up a hit or a run. He had two strikeouts and four walks.
Brookings will have a week off and will hit the road again on May 30 and take on the Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels at 7:30 p.m.
