Public invited to Six-MileCreekFeasibility Study follow-up meeting on May 20

BROOKINGS After gathering public input about Six-Mile Creek flood mitigation efforts in March, the city of Brookings will host a follow-up meeting on May 20.

The citys engineering staff and consultants will share updated mitigation options and discuss the next steps for the Six-Mile CreekFeasibility Study, said City Engineer Charlie Richter.

The public meeting is scheduled for 5 to 6:30 p.m. on the third floor of the Brookings City and County Government Center at 520 Third St. A presentation will kick off the meeting. Citizens will then be invited to ask questions and share their feedback.

Six-MileCreekmeanders through the western part of the City of Brookings, flowing through 20-plus bridge and culvert crossings. During high-flows, Six-MileCreekhas the potential to impact more than 240 structures.

We want to reduce future losses to structures and public infrastructure along the Six-MileCreekcorridor within the City, Richter said. Thats the ultimate goal of the study.

The study will:

  • Evaluate flooding and potential mitigation over a range of flood flows
  • Leverage new flood mapping to understand and mitigate flood risk
  • Recognize flood factors and high flood-risk areas
  • Develop flood mitigation alternatives to reduce risk
  • Identify flood mitigation projects that are eligible for federal funding

The study is funded through FEMAs Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, and the work is being carried out by the citys contractor, RESPEC of Rapid City.

Flooding is the most costly and common natural disaster in the U.S., according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
