Two-state, high-speed chase roars past Brookings, ends with arrest

BROOKINGS COUNTY It was more or less all hands on deck for area law enforcers on Wednesday morning as a vehicle pursuit that started in Ivanhoe, Minnesota, roared through Brookings County at over 100 mph before ending at a home a few miles south of Colman.

Coty Tellinghuisen, 39, of Pipestone, Minnesota, was arrested following the end of the pursuit, which was estimated to have covered 70 miles, and involved seven law enforcement agencies.

According to information from the sheriffs and states attorneys offices in Brookings and Moody counties, he is facing several charges. In Brookings County, the charges are aggravated eluding and reckless driving. In Moody County, the charges are first-degree burglary, aggravated eluding and reckless driving.

In addition to that, Lincoln County, Minnesota, is also investigating the incident, but hadnt filed charges as of Thursday afternoon, according to Glen Petersen, the states attorney there. Additionally, Tellinghuisen is facing several warrants out of Pipestone County, Minnesota, per the probable cause statement from the Brookings County States Attorneys Office.

The felony Minnesota warrants are two for possession of a controlled substance, possession 25 grams or more of methamphetamine, and use of a police radio during commission of a crime.

Bond was set at $5,000 in Brookings County and $10,000 in Moody County. Tellinghuisen met the bond for Brookings County, but remained in the Brookings County Detention Center as of Thursday afternoon awaiting a second bond hearing in Moody County.

The incidents narrative, per a news release from the Brookings County Sheriffs Office, goes as follows:

• The Brookings County Sheriffs Office joined the pursuit around 8:52 a.m. Wednesday, which started near Ivanhoe by the Lincoln County (Minn.) Sheriffs Office. Alleged drug activity triggered the pursuit.
• Assistance was immediately requested from the South Dakota Highway Patrol. When the pursuit entered Brookings County, Tellinghuisens vehicle, a 2012 GMC Acadia, was traveling over 100 mph on state Highway 30, where a Brookings County deputy observed the vehicle and took over the pursuit near 473rd Avenue on Highway 30.
• The pursuit then entered the southbound lanes of Interstate 29, and assistance was requested from the Brookings Police Department and South Dakota State University Police Department to provide visual deterrence for the pursuit to not enter the city of Brookings.
• When Tellinghuisens vehicle passed mile marker 132, a Highway Patrol trooper was able to successfully deploy stop sticks however, they were ineffective.
• The pursuit continued to mile marker 127, where Tellinghuisen exited I-29 and turned west on 217th Street. The pursuit then turned south on 471st Avenue and assistance was requested from the Moody County and Lake County sheriffs offices.
• Tellinghuisen went several miles down rural highways and gravel roads before entering a residence approximately 2 miles south of Colman. A resident of the home was present and was able to secure herself in a bedroom while Tellinghuisen attempted to hide in a shed.
• Officers from the Brookings County Sheriffs Office, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Lake County Sheriffs Office, Lincoln County (Minn.) Sheriffs Office and Brookings Police Department were able to search the residence and surrounding buildings and located Tellinghuisen in the shed.
• It is believed the driver stopped the vehicle when it ran out of gas.
