Brookings will see a partial solar eclipse

Residents in Brookings will be treated to a partial solar eclipse on April 8, weather permitting.

Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. Those living in a 100-mile-wide path from Texas to northern Ohio through Maine will see a total solar eclipse, where the Moons disk completely covers the Sun. The rest of the country will see a partial solar eclipse.

In Brookings the eclipse will begin at 12:44 p.m. and end at 3:09 p.m. Maximum coverage of the Sun will occur at 1:57 pm when about 70% of the Sun is covered.

While best viewed with eclipse glasses, residents can look online for how to make a solar pinhole viewer or watch the NASA Livestream online. Eclipse glasses are available at various businesses in town.
