KANSAS CITY South Dakota State wrestlers Cade DeVos and Tanner Sloan advanced the the national quarterfinals on the first day of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the T-Mobile Center on Thursday.
Eight Jackrabbits competed on the first day of the tournament with quarterfinals and semifinals set to take place on Friday and the medal rounds and championships set to take place on Saturday.
DeVos competed as the second seed at 174 pounds and won his first match over Riders Michael Wilson by a 15-0 technical fall. DeVos advanced to the quarterfinals with a 10-4 decision over Armys Benjamin Pasiuk and will face seventh-seeded Lennox Wolak of Colorado in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Sloan is the third seed at 197 points and began his tournament by pinning Buffalos Sam Mitchell at 5:26. Sloan earned a 14-4 major decision over John Pazanski of Rutgers in the second round and will face sixth-seeded Lou Deprez of Binghamton on Friday.
While Sloan and DeVos won both of their opening bracket, four SDSU wrestlers are still alive in the consolation bracket.
Tanner Jordan was the 23rd seed at 125 pounds and was pinned 45 seconds into his first match with Wisconsins Eric Barnett. Jordan rebounded for a 16-2 major decision over Blake West of Northern Illinois and will face Patrick McKee of Minnesota on Thursday.
Derrick Cardinal was the 18th seed at 133 pounds and lost by a 12-4 major decision to Iowas Brody Teske. After defeating Americans Maximillian Leete, Cardinal will face Nic Bouzakis of Ohio State on Friday.
Cael Swensen was the 15th seed in the 157-pound bracket and won his first match by a 4-1 decision over Northern Colorados Vinny Zerban. Swensen took second seed Jacori Teemer of Arizona to the brink in the second round but lost in a 4-1 sudden victory. Swensen will face Ohio States Isaac Wilcox on Friday.
Bennett Berge was the ninth seed at 184 pounds but was upset in by Wisconsins Shane Liegel in the first round in a 9-1 decision. Berge rebounded for an 11-0 major decision over Sam Wolf or Air Force and will face Layne Malczewski of Michigan State on Friday.
Clay Carlson competed at 141 pounds and lost an 8-3 decision to North Carolina States Ryan Jack in the first round and a 5-3 decision to West Virginias Jordan Titus in the consolation bracket. Carlson finished the season with a record of 17-9.
Alek Martin competed at 157 pounds and lost by an 18-3 technical fall to Virginia Techs Caleb Henson in the first round. Martin lost by injury default at 2:37 of his consolation match with Caleb Rathjen of Iowa to finish the season with a record of 20-12.
The tournament will continue at 11 a.m. Friday.
