BROOKINGS COUNTY A controlled burn that turned into a grass fire on Sunday afternoon southeast of White caused approximately $3,000 in damage, according to a news release from the Brookings County Sheriffs Office.
The incident, which was reported at 3:58 p.m., unfolded on 207th Street near 486th Avenue and burned around 100 acres, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote Monday morning.
A resident had burned trash several hours beforehand and observed the fire to be out before leaving the area, Sebring wrote. When he returned, he discovered the fire had reignited and spread into a nearby grass field.
Sebring added a reminder to county residents to practice good fire safety and adhere to the countys public nuisance ordinance about open burning.
Residents are required to notify dispatch at 605-692-2113 of any open burning and cannot have any open burning after dark.
Wind and dry conditions have caused a potential fire danger within Brookings County and fires can easily spread, Sebring wrote.
Use caution and remain with the fire until it is completely extinguished.
The National Weather Service had the county in a red flag warning category on Monday as well, although there were no alerts for Tuesday or later in the week as of Monday afternoon.
Agencies that responded to the grass fire were the sheriffs office, Elkton Ambulance and fire departments from Brookings, Elkton, White and Aurora.
