The Democratic candidate for South Dakotas lone U.S. House seat will be the keynote speaker at the Brookings County Democrats St. Patricks Party on March 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the VFW in downtown Brookings.
Sheryl Johnson announced her candidacy Wednesday to run against Republican incumbent Dusty Johnson in November. Johnson says she is running because she is frustrated by Congress whose members only complain about what is happening at the U.S./Mexico border instead of fixing the immigration system. She also wants to stop the attacks on womens health. As a mother of four daughters of childbearing age, Johnson believes it is wrong that they have fewer rights than she did. Johnson says that reproductive health is a discussion that should stay between mothers and their doctors, and that the government has no business interfering. She believes the current congressman doesnt listen to the voters and she wants to represent all the people.
Currently, Johnson is the Democratic chair of District 11. She is a former candidate for the district in the legislature. While growing up, her grandparents ran a dairy farm, and her dad was an ag loan officer at the local bank and a part- time farmer. She spent 12 years as an education assistant at Roosevelt High School. She was also a military wife for four years while her husband was deployed during Desert Storm. For three years, she lived at Camp Lejeune. She also worked in retail management. Johnson is now retired and volunteers in her community. Nominating petitions for her candidacy will be available to sign.
Speakers will also feature Rep. Kaydn Wittman, who will give Democrats an overview of the Legislative session and her work on the House Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Local Government committees. She represents District 15 and is running for re-election.
She has sponsored bills that benefit children, drivers license holders, and to hold criminals accountable to their victims.
Local office candidates Nick Wendell, Wayne Avery and Cole Sartell will also give updates on their campaigns.
Ballot initiative petitions to put Roe on the ballot, take the sales tax off food and to legalize marijuana will be available to sign.
The event will feature an Irish meal, cash bar, and end with a live auction of Democratic memorabilia. Attendees are encouraged to bring items to donate.
Tickets are $25/$15 for students and are available online at https://secure.actblue.com/donate/brookingspaddys24 or call 605-691-9129.
The event is open to the public.
