Felony charges pending after pursuit, wreck at new Interstate 29 interchange in Brookings

BROOKINGS Erratic driving on the interstate, police pursuit and a blown red light led to a nasty wreck just off the new interstate interchange in south Brookings on Saturday and a 34-year-old man in the county jail facing felony charges.

According to a release from the Brookings County Sheriffs Office, deputies and the Brookings Police Department responded to a traffic complaint alleging that a 2002 Chevy Blazer was traveling well above the speed limit and weaving erratically.

According to a probable cause statement, a sheriffs deputy located the truck an observed it both speeding and driving recklessly before it took Exit 130 on I-29. After the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the Blazer fled from the deputy at an unsafe rate of speed.

The Blazer then blew the stoplight at 22nd Avenue and 20th Street South and struck a Honda Fit, which rolled up onto its side on the north boulevard of 20th Street South.

According to the report, the male driver of the Blazer and the female passenger both briefly tried to flee the scene on foot before being ordered down on the ground by the deputy. Both complied.

The driver and the passenger in the Honda were not injured.

The driver of the Blazer, Chancellor Eagle, 34, of Webster, was arrested and charged with DUI, aggravated eluding, reckless driving and driving while revoked.

The passenger, Peyton Sharpfish, 21, of Webster, was charged for providing a false name to law enforcement as well as outstanding warrants.

Both were still in the Brookings County Detention Center as of late Monday afternoon. Damage was estimated at more than $36,000.
